TAEYEON

Leads J-pop Remake Project with Tuki.’s “Bansanka”

By Isabel Miller

Girls Generation leader and soloist TAEYEON is set to release a Korean remake of Japanese hit “Bansanka,” kicking off the first volume of the new J-POP REMAKE project.

J-POP REMAKE is a project created by singer and broadcaster Kangnam, who announced both the project and his role as producer last week. It invites K-pop artists to remake popular J-pop songs in the Korean language, encouraging an exchange of music between the two countries. At the same time, it offers artists the opportunity to place their own unique twists on the original songs, demonstrating their personal tones and strengths.

As part of the announcement, Kangnam explained the deeper significance of the project: “I want to introduce good J-pop to Korea, and also introduce Korea’s classics to Japan. I would like to try serving as a kind of cultural envoy that connects the two countries through music.”

The idea was founded on his personal experience as that “cultural envoy” online, having released several covers of Japanese songs on YouTube while working with K-pop artists in various videos on the same channel. His channel was also attached to the first teaser of the series, which revealed that TAEYEON will be the first artist to take part.

TAEYEON will release a remake of “Bansanka” by Japanese artist Tuki. on June 29th, as the beginning of J-POP REMAKE Vol.1.

The song became a hit in Japan swiftly upon its release last year, topping Billboard Japan’s Hot 100 and Oricon’s Combined Singles Ranking – one of the primary charts used to track the popularity of music in Japan.

It marks TAEYEON’s first project since her ten-year anniversary as a solo artist in December 2025, which she marked with a slew of activity: the compilation album Panorama: The Best of TAEYEON, an exhibit in Seoul, and an eight-city tour across Asia. Panorama, led by the pop-rock title track of the same name, topped the Hanteo Daily Physical Album Chart; TAEYEON’s career is still blooming 18 years after she entered the industry as a member of the iconic SM group Girls’ Generation.

J-POP REMAKE adds to her significance as an artist from a cultural standpoint, placing her at the centre of a project that is slated to become a long-term fixture. SHgold Networks, as the overseer of the project, stated that it is “not a one-off release but a long-term Korea-Japan music exchange project” which will "continue to serve as a cultural bridge” between the two countries.

The music markets of South Korea and Japan have seen an increased crossover in recent years, with K-pop artists of varying popularity levels from rookies to global stars consistently releasing albums in Japanese. Japanese groups such as &TEAM continue to grow domestically and abroad, having released their Korean debut Back to Life last October, while XG regularly appears on Korean music shows such as KBS’s Music Bank as part of their comeback promotions.

Rather than artists simply crossing over, the J-POP REMAKE project frames the exchange as an active, curated conversation between the two markets, with Korean reinterpretations of Japanese hits at its centre.

For now, TAEYEON leads the way as a fitting choice for a project that frames itself as a long-term cultural bridge rather than a one-off release. More artists for J-POP REMAKE Vol.1 are expected to be announced soon.
