SM Entertainment has completed the third phase of its KWANGYA Forest initiative in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, expanding its branded ecological space within Seoul Forest by 400㎡. The new section includes the planting of 150 trees and 800 flowers, with a focus on soil restoration through natural ecological processes — no artificial cultivation.
The project, which began in 2023, now spans a total of 1,290㎡ and is home to more than 120 species of flowers and over 5,000 trees. SM’s CEO Jang Cheol Hyuk attended the signing ceremony on April 29 alongside representatives from the Garden-City Bureau and Dongbu Park Leisure Center.
Described as a “futuristic forest,” KWANGYA Forest draws directly from SM’s ongoing brand narrative — referencing the company’s metaverse lore and IP universe — while advancing biodiversity and public environmental efforts. The project’s first phase was previously awarded the Grand Prize at the Seoul Metropolitan City’s Green City Awards for its contribution to biodiversity conservation.
SM’s growing environmental efforts are also extending into its live events. During its recent 30th-anniversary concert, SMTOWN Live 2025 in Seoul, the company launched a carbon footprint measurement campaign and conducted surveys among attendees to collect environmental data. It also partnered with a non-profit organisation to improve accessibility at the event, developing on-site support guidelines for audiences with disabilities.
While these moves can be seen as part of SM’s broader ESG commitments, they also reflect a calculated brand strategy. By embedding environmental and social responsibility into its existing cultural universe, SM is positioning itself as more than a K-pop label — but as a future-facing, socially engaged company. In an industry where public trust, sustainability, and generational values are becoming increasingly important, such moves signal where K-pop’s leading players see the next frontier of influence.
Whether this approach sets a new standard or remains a symbolic gesture, SM’s ESG efforts are becoming more visible — and more central to how the company wants to be understood.
