LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE Team Up For Collab Track

On June 10, HYBE girl groups LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE released their first English collaboration track, "Iconic By Mistake." The announcement generated significant attention before the song even dropped – and not all of it positive. The three groups have each established themselves as trendsetters in their own right, with LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT building Western traction from a K-pop base, and KATSEYE operating across both markets simultaneously. An English-language track combining all three was a deliberate positioning move – the question is who it was positioning them for.

The answer is probably the same audience already watching all three. KATSEYE was built as the intersection of K-pop methodology and Western pop appeal, and fans of all three groups tend to move fluidly between both worlds. Whether the track landed with that audience is a separate question to whether the strategy behind it was sound. What's clearer is the broader picture: with ABD – HYBE's new girl-group-focused label – already teased, "Iconic By Mistake" looks less like a one-off experiment and more like the opening move in a coordinated push to consolidate HYBE's girl group presence across both markets at once.

The 18th Melon Music Awards Expands To 2 Days

On June 9, Kakao Entertainment announced that this year’s Melon Music Awards (MMA) will be held across two days for the first time, scheduled on November 14 and 15 at Seoul’s Gocheok Sky Dome. This year’s theme will be “K-pop: Connect: The New Pulse,” celebrating K-pop’s global expansion. This marks a significant moment in K-pop history, with MMA’s two-day expansion acknowledging and matching the industry’s rapid growth in interest and popularity. According to the organizers, “the expanded format is intended to create the largest K-pop festival yet and allow more artists and fans to experience the event together.”

This could be a rewarding addition and improvement, as it allows for both fans and idols to relish in K-pop’s celebration, rather than cramming it all into a one-day event. “We will expand MMA 2026 to better reflect the voices of K-pop fans around the world through a wider variety of stages. We will make it a festival venue for artists and fans to share their passion and enjoy together,” the organizers further commented. One of the most anticipated aspects of K-pop’s end-of-the-year award shows is the many spectacular performances and collab stages that unfold throughout the ceremony — it’s a unique experience that could only really happen in events like this.

Melon Announces Partnership With LINE Music (Japan) and Tencent Music (China)

In addition to the Melon Music Awards taking place across two days, Kakao Entertainment also announced Melon’s new partnership with Japan’s LINE Music and China’s Tencent Music to reflect data from all three platforms and better represent K-pop fans across East Asia. The data will be used to track streaming activity and fandom engagement across platforms and will be incorporated into select award categories. By calculating Japanese and Chinese fan activity, this could ultimately tip the scales in some artists’ favor when it comes to awards, especially considering certain idols and groups can have larger, more active fanbases depending on the country.

Not only will this partnership play a role in this year’s MMA, but it will also become a standard practice with the launch of “Global-K Chart.” This comprehensive global chart — the first of its kind — will exist alongside platform-specific charts, presenting music engagement patterns in a unified manner while keeping pace with global K-pop trends. According to Kakao Entertainment, “All charts are updated simultaneously across the platforms, calculating scores based on the previous 24 hours of total usage data and combining each platform's data with various fan activity metrics. In Melon’s case, the score incorporates music consumption data like the number of streaming and download users, as well as fandom engagement metrics such as the number of likes. Leveraging its extensive experience in operating various household charts, Melon aims to further expand its scope by utilizing data from Tencent Music and LINE MUSIC.”

With this new way of combining fan activity and streaming across three countries, both artists and their labels can better strategize and market their material with more of an understanding of what’s trending and what people are actually connecting with. “Going beyond music consumption, the ‘Global-K Chart’ captures the devotion that fans in Korea, China, and Japan show to their stars,” Melon said. “Leveraging actual usage volume and fan activities from each platform, we will establish this chart as the premier K-pop chart that reflects K-pop’s global trends most accurately, while taking meaningful steps to help artists and fans connect more deeply.”

To call more attention and traction to this announcement, several K-pop stars sent congratulatory video messages on Melon and official social media channels on May 26, including NCT’s Taeyong, LE SSERAFIM, ALPHA DRIVE ONE, and AND2BLE. It’s a brilliant strategy considering certain K-pop songs and artists are more or less popular in certain regions, while others see consistent success across markets. While the MMA performance lineup, award categories, and nominees have yet to be announced, it’ll be interesting to see how these new additions will factor into the overall quality and enjoyment of this year’s award ceremonies and music consumption as a whole.
