Comeback Corner
Billlie, B:DAWN, YUHZ & More
Read on for our picks of the week.
This week in K-pop brings two very different boy group debuts — one of which is virtual — the continuation of a girl group’s most famous era to date, and a cultural reunion that’s over 10 years in the making. Between hyperpop, funk/R&B, and electronic dance, the musical spectrum here is anything but dull.
Billlie - “ZAP”
After four years since its first installment, girl group Billlie finally continues their the collective soul and unconcious album series with Chapter Two and its lead single, “ZAP.” Built around a post-hyperpop track with an almost industrial beat progression, 'ZAP' focuses on blocking out external noise and gossip to embrace confidence and self-assurance. With a dark, charismatic edge, Billlie is not pulling their punches with this one.
B:DAWN - “BEOM”
With the rise of virtual and animated groups in K-pop,South Korean animation studio, Sudio Mir, has debuted its first virtual boy group, B:DAWN, through its subsidiary company, Durii Entertainment. The five-member group released its first single, “BEOM,” an electronic-dance track that “condenses the spirit of the tiger and the members’ strong energy into music.” Intertwining the video’s tiger imagery with traditional Korean aesthetic and landmarks, “BEOM” is a fiery introduction to K-pop’s newest virtual act.
YUHZ - “Rush Rush”
After being formed on the SBS global audition program, B: MY BOYZ, rookie boy group YUHZ has officially made their debut with “Rush Rush.” In this refreshing, summer-ready pop track, the eight-member group sings of expressing what’s inside your heart without fear, even if it’s a little flawed in the process. The same could be said about a rookie group’s debut — pushing forward with confidence and style, no matter the mishaps they encounter along the way. YUHZ makes a confident start.
Anderson .Paak - “AFTERTASE” (featuring DEAN)
While technically not K-pop, but still a collab that’s previously echoed throughout the K-pop community, American artist Anderson .Paak reunites with Korean alt-R&B singer DEAN in “AFTERTASTE.” The bouncy and infectious track serves as the pair’s first song together in over a decade, with .Paak and DEAN previously collaborating on 2015’s “Put My Hands On You.” With synth strings and a not-so-subtle funk influence, the artists’ back-and-forth energy is almost like they never left, with Grammy award-winning producer and K-pop veteran Dem Jointz boosting the track with his ear for a catchy groove. For longtime fans of DEAN and Anderson .Paak’s previous work together, “AFTERTASTE” scratches an itch that’s sure to leave fans sated and fulfilled.
