Ten years ago, a host of 3rd generation K-pop girl groups began infiltrating Western markets and shaping the industry for years to come. Now, individual artists are consistently receiving domestic and global attention, with distinct imagery and viral tracks that have an undeniable performance power. DAYOUNG has played a significant part in both eras on her way to the KPOPWORLD Festival stage.
Before the influx of Y2K, 4th generation girl groups who continue to dominate international charts came WJSN/Cosmic Girls, an enduring pillar of the 3rd generation scene. DAYOUNG debuted as part of the original 12-member line-up in February 2016 with the mini album WOULD YOU LIKE?, taking her place as one of the leading vocalists. It was not an especially record-breaking release, but the start of a steady rise in the industry.
The group’s core and current ten members – Seola, Bona, Exy, Soobin, Luda, Dawon, Eunseo, Yeoreum, DAYOUNG, and Yeonjung – released a total of one studio album, ten mini albums, and 13 digital singles over a six year period. Amongst those releases is the cultural phenomenon “As You Wish,” which has topped South Korean charts at midnight on New Year’s Day several times since 2019, and their career-high single album Sequence.
They became known for their enduring chart success, and with early performances at international Hallyu events like KCON were recognised for having a key stake in the growth of Hallyu worldwide.
Back then, DAYOUNG stood out for her cheerful personality and bubbly stage presence. Upon her debut as a soloist in 2025, she took time off in the U.S. and underwent a reinvention. With the debut single album gonna love me, right? she harnessed her vocal power with a bold, more mature concept led by the English-language title track “body.”
Its fun, seasonal sound made it one of the leading songs of the summer, and it reached peaks within the top five on South Korean music platforms MelOn and Bugs.
DAYOUNG entered 2026 with this newly established image and continued to explore themes of love, self expression and ambition in the single album What’s a girl to do. Most recently, in August, she teamed up with fellow KPOPWORLD Festival performer Jay Park for the dance track single “FLIRTY” to harness that sultry side. Mixing classic pop and dance genres with an airy, relaxed feel and a dash of 2000s R&B, DAYOUNG has maintained a consistent sound that is slowly becoming her signature. Increasingly, her own identity and experiences are becoming part of each track she releases, with her name appearing on songwriting and composition credits.
Throughout this summer, DAYOUNG has performed at the infamous WATERBOMB festival and various other events across Asia, garnering a reputation for creating that ideal bright, vibrant festival atmosphere. This is why she deserves a place on the line-up this October – her enjoyment is infectious, and she has delivered confident, expressive performances powered by her voice and infused with that positive attitude consistently since becoming a soloist.
If you happened to miss DAYOUNG’s viral debut, three songs are essential to understanding her new direction.
“Body” is a song you simply can’t skip. Bright, fun, and catchy, it’s an easily digestible dance-pop track that finds a home on every summer K-pop playlist.
“What’s a girl to do” carries a sultry, teasing tone, while also providing moments of introspection. Though calmer than her debut, its hybrid dance-pop, R&B style is equally satisfying.
“Number one rockstar” is a fan favourite B-side that represents DAYOUNG as an artist. Her dreams, her ambition – backed up by gritty guitar riffs and a nostalgic pop-rock sound.
DAYOUNG’s reinvention was built in the U.S., but she hasn’t performed in the country since her explosive debut. With the backing of WJSN’s history and their influence on the growth of Hallyu, alongside her international prominence as a soloist beginning to receive attention worldwide, it’s about time she makes the trip – and the KPOPWORLD Festival in Texas provides that opportunity.
