Take Three at the 2026 AMAs, Including Artist of the Year

By Hasan Beyaz

BTS opened and closed the 2026 American Music Awards on their own terms. The group performed "Hooligan" to kick off the ceremony at MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Monday night, then walked away with three of the evening's major prizes: Artist of the Year, Song of the Summer, and Best Male K-Pop Artist.

It was a clean sweep by any measure. The Artist of the Year win – their second – came in a category that also included Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, and Harry Styles, and brought their cumulative AMA tally to 14.

The centrepiece of the night was "SWIM," the lead single from their fifth studio album ARIRANG, which claimed Song of the Summer. Released in March, the track debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Global 200. All 13 vocal tracks from the album charted on the Global 200 for eight consecutive weeks – a record, according to the band's label BIGHIT MUSIC. ARIRANG also entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1.

Accepting the Song of the Summer award, RM addressed the pressure behind making the record. "We tried to figure out what music felt the most 'us' right now," he said. "The only thing we believed in was that we have to keep challenging and keep moving forward." V added a message to fans directly: "To everyone out there who keeps swimming no matter what, we send you our love and support."

The Artist of the Year speech leaned into longevity. "It's a fan-voted award, so our biggest thanks goes to our ARMY all over the world who stood by us for the past thirteen years," said RM. j-hope pointed to the album's reception: "We have been overwhelmed by the reaction to this album. Thank you for embracing ARIRANG." Jimin singled out the touring audience: "Thank you for passionately following us on tour and showing so much love in every city." Best Male K-Pop Artist was announced off-air, while the group also presented SZA with the Best Female R&B Artist award during the ceremony.

The AMAs night sits within a larger Las Vegas moment for the group. BTS are currently midway through a four-night sold-out run at Allegiant Stadium as part of their ARIRANG world tour, which runs through 31 May. Running alongside the concerts, the 'BTS THE CITY ARIRANG LAS VEGAS' experience has installed immersive activations across city landmarks tied to the album's themes.

Winning Artist of the Year at the AMAs for a second time, over a field of genuine commercial heavyweights, is not a small thing. It signals that BTS are no longer operating as a crossover success story – they're simply a mainstream one. Thirteen years in, with a stadium tour underway and an album that has outperformed almost everything released this year by any metric, the conversation about where they sit in pop's hierarchy feels increasingly settled.
