This Week in K-pop Stages: RIIZE, Baekhyun of EXO, i-dle and X: IN shine
by Anwaya Mane
This week on K-pop stages, Gen 3 and Gen 4 idols stood side by side—not just to return, but to reclaim. Veteran acts brought poise, polish, and a hard-won sense of purpose. Younger artists met them with urgency, hunger, and the need to prove they belong. Their styles may differ, but the mission was the same: to rise above past setbacks and deliver performances that leave a mark.
Stage Of The Week: RIIZE - “Fly Up” (Music Bank, May 23)
Few acts embody resilience quite like RIIZE. With the release of their first studio album, Odyssey, on May 19, the group has marked a significant milestone in their journey, one shaped by setbacks and challenges. True to their name, RIIZE have taken every fall and every hurtful word in stride, rising above the odds to continue pursuing their true potential.
On May 23, the six-member group took centre stage at Music Bank, delivering a powerful performance of their latest lead single, "Fly Up," from Odyssey. Embracing their charismatic boyhood era, the members were styled in red bomber jackets layered over white T-shirts, paired with baggy trousers and denim. Soft, dewy makeup and delicate accessories completed their quintessential K-pop boyband look, exuding both charm and star power.
The performance began with chants of “Fly Up” echoing from the live audience, setting an electric tone for RIIZE’s stage. As the members launched into their synchronised choreography, their infectious smiles and impeccable coordination brought to mind the vibrant energy of Disney’s High School Musical. The performance mirrored the film’s spirited dance routines, perfectly aligning with RIIZE’s “summer meets youth meets go-getter” aesthetic and their upbeat sonic soundscape.
While “Fly Up” may not be RIIZE’s most groundbreaking title track, it stands as a solid and promising debut for a group releasing their first studio album. The song is cheerful, vibrant, and carefree, capturing the essence of boyhood, adolescence, and the journey of growing up. It’s a meaningful step forward in shaping the group’s evolving discography and musical identity.
The performance is lively and dynamic, with a dance routine that is precise and well-rehearsed, striking the perfect balance without overshadowing the spontaneity and joy of the moment. Each member’s vocals shine, seamlessly blending with the audience’s cheers and rhythmic chants to create a harmonious and electrifying atmosphere.
A true stand-out moment, make that six, comes during the high-energy chorus, where all members are fully immersed, radiating pure, unfiltered joy as they groove in perfect sync. The performance peaks with Wonbin’s “ending fairy” moment, serving as the perfect icing on the cake. With “Fly Up,” RIIZE make a bold statement: they’re not here to be defined by the past, but to carve out their place in the present and lay the foundation for a vibrant, enduring musical legacy.
