Moonbyul: Shine like a Star

Moonbyul, born Moon Byul-yi on December 22, 1992, in Bucheon, South Korea, is a standout figure in the K-pop industry. As a rapper, singer, songwriter, and talk show host under RBW, she’s part of the powerhouse behind Mamamoo and its sub-unit Mamamoo+. Inspired by TVXQ and Girls' Generation, particularly Taeyeon, Moonbyul's journey into music began during her middle school years. Initially, she aspired to be a police officer or teacher, but her passion for music led her to SM Entertainment's academy and later to Wonmi High School and the Paekche Institute of the Arts. Her unique stage name, Moonbyul, encapsulates her father’s wish for her to shine like a star, which she has indeed fulfilled throughout her career.

Moonbyul's ascent to fame was marked by perseverance, navigating through numerous auditions, trainee contracts, and scams. Joining RBW in 2011, she initially trained as a vocalist but was later recommended to switch to rapping, debuting with Mamamoo in 2014. Her versatility shone through as she specialized in freestyle dance and hip-hop, creating the choreography for their debut track "Mr. Ambiguous." She has co-written almost all of Mamamoo's lead singles, crafting her raps and significantly contributing to the group's distinctive sound.

Mamamoo's rise to prominence was marked by their second extended play, Piano Man, and a viral performance at the 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2016. Moonbyul launched her solo career in 2018 with the EP Selfish, featuring Seulgi of Red Velvet. Her second EP, Dark Side of the Moon, released in 2020, showcased her musical range, blending genres like jazz, blues, and hip-hop. The album received critical acclaim for its bold sound and style, emphasizing feminine strength and Moonbyul's duality as both a singer and rapper. Her repackaged third EP, 門OON, marked a stylistic transformation, resonating with emotional depth and sincere lyrics.

Venturing beyond music, Moonbyul became the first Mamamoo member to host her own show, Studio Moon Night, in 2021. Her success as a host was recognized with an award at the 2022 Korea Brand Customer Loyalty Index. She also showcased her versatility on SBS's variety show Kick a Goal, and launched a YouTube channel, expanding her influence. Her third EP, 6equence, released in 2022, challenged gender norms with its androgynous style and gender-neutral lyrics, while her fifth EP, C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap), solidified her status as a leading female solo artist in K-pop.

Moonbyul's achievements extend beyond her music and hosting career. She has been involved in philanthropy, donating to causes supporting children with disabilities and lending her voice to a documentary highlighting their struggles. Her first studio album, Starlit of Muse, released in 2024, achieved significant commercial success, and she is set to embark on her first solo world tour. Moonbyul’s journey is a testament to resilience and versatility, and remains a need-to-know figure in the K-pop industry.
