Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “The Wave” by SE SO NEON

SE SO NEON, the dynamic K-indie sensation spearheaded by Hwang Soyoon and Park Hyunjin, has made waves (lol) since its inception in 2016. Aptly named “new kids” in Korean, the band swiftly injected a fresh vitality into South Korea’s indie rock scene. Their meteoric rise was punctuated by accolades such as Rookie of the Year and Best Rock Song at the 2018 Korean Music Awards for their irresistibly groovy single “The Wave,” which captivated audiences with its blend of airy synths, infectious guitar riffs, and Hwang’s distinctive androgynous vocals.

SE SO NEON’s sonic tapestry, a mosaic of psychedelic rock, synth pop, and new wave influences, resonates profoundly with listeners worldwide. Their boundary-pushing ethos also saw them embark on their inaugural North American tour in 2022, marking a significant milestone in their global trajectory.  They blend band, indie, rock, and even R&B elements. Their music defies categorization yet resonates universally, appealing to fans of K-pop, classical music, and listeners spanning generations.
