Daily Non-K-Pop Spotlight: “Porter” by ADOY ft. Woo

We’ve said it before, but ADOY has a perfect blend of smooth, chilled-out, low-key indie vibes. “Porter,” the second track from their second album, takes these soft, fuzzed-out indie stylings and adds a much more hip-hop inspired vocal flow on top, thanks to the addition of featured artist Woo. The track doesn’t stray too far from the rest of VIVID, but it does stand out as one of the more unique tracks on the album.

There are a lot of subtle details in this song that might go unheard the first time you give it a listen. What seems like a fairly formulaic and repetitive song gives way to small moments and arrangement choices that very quietly give additional emotional depth and bolster the groove. The drums especially are important to listen to, as they switch up just enough between sections to change the flow of the track from part to part. Small marching snares on the second verse give a gentle sense of propulsion, toms take over the main groove in the outro—it’s all a wonderful display of restraint and subtlety which makes for an effectively enjoyable time.
