ZICO Releases New ‘DUET’ with YOASOBI’s Lilas (ikura)

ZICO has returned with a new single, ‘DUET’, linking up with Japanese musician Lilas – best known as ikura, the vocalist of YOASOBI – for a cross-border collaboration that feels confident rather than overstated.

The track brings together two artists operating in very different musical lanes. ZICO’s elastic rap delivery sits opposite Lilas’s clear, expressive vocal tone, with ‘DUET’ leaning into contrast rather than smoothing it away. The result is cohesive without being predictable, built around shared rhythm rather than stylistic compromise. The production team behind last year’s ‘SPOT! (feat. JENNIE)’ also returns, giving the single a polished but playful backbone.

Conceptually, ‘DUET’ reportedly began with a simple question: what happens when two artists who don’t obviously overlap meet in the middle? Each artist wrote their own verses, allowing Korean and Japanese lyrics to sit side by side without over-explaining the crossover. The exchange feels conversational rather than symbolic, driven by chemistry more than concept.

There’s added significance in ‘DUET’ arriving when it does. As Japanese artists gain greater visibility in global pop spaces, Korean acts have become more selective about how – and why – they collaborate across borders. Rather than leaning on novelty, ‘DUET’ reads as a meeting between two artists already operating with international audiences in mind.

Lilas’s presence is key. As the voice of YOASOBI, she represents a strand of Japanese pop that prioritises narrative, emotion, and songwriting over idol frameworks, making the collaboration feel intentional rather than ornamental. Paired with ZICO – an artist who has long blurred the lines between producer, rapper, and pop architect – the track captures a moment where Korean and Japanese pop aren’t borrowing from each other so much as speaking a shared creative language.

The accompanying music video mirrors that energy. Shot in Japan, it places ZICO and Lilas in everyday settings – classrooms, offices, city streets – where spontaneous choreography spreads from person to person. Small gestures ripple outward, blurring the line between performer and passer-by and turning ordinary spaces into moments of collective movement.

‘DUET’ continues ZICO’s recent run of outward-looking collaborations, following the global success of ‘SPOT! (feat. JENNIE)’ and reinforcing his interest in projects that move beyond borders without forcing the point.
