QQQ Break Down [QtoresQ]
By Hasan Beyaz
For QQQ, [QtoresQ] is four songs built around a single idea: that saving yourself and saving someone else can be the same act. The title track “UNCOOL” that opens the album sets the tone, with a rejection of trend-chasing in favour of something more honest. "Rather than chasing trends, we wanted to have our own unique colour," KB, JISUNG and NINE explain. "We believe that represents QQQ."
The album's second track, “QtoresQ”, makes that conviction explicit. The title translates as "saving Q from Q" – where Q can mean the group, or the listener, or both at once. It's also, they reveal, a description of how QQQ came to exist at all: KB and NINE reaching out to JISUNG, JISUNG taking their hand, each of them filling something the others needed. The song is built from that experience and extended outward, an invitation for anyone listening to find the same kind of strength in each other.
“Rainbow shade” takes things somewhere more personal – the story of a member pushing past their vocal comfort zone, relearning how expression and physicality intersect in the recording booth. “Burnaway (into the fire)” closes the album, and the memory attached to it is light: a moment of accidental comedy mid-session that turned a song into a private joke. Even there, the closeness between the three of them is the point.
Taken together, the four tracks play like a milestone of who QQQ are, and exactly what it took to get here. Read on to experience [QtoresQ] with the artists.
QQQ As the title track, this song holds even deeper meaning for us. We put a lot of thought into selecting the title track. Among many candidates, we felt this was the song that perfectly conveyed the message we wanted to share—rather than chasing trends, we wanted to have our own unique color. We believe that represents QQQ, which is why we chose it as the title track.
These days, trends seem to matter more than ever, and it sometimes feels like people are losing their own unique colors. Through this song, we wanted to share the message that we hope for a world filled with more diverse individuality.
QQQ This is a track that shares the same title as the album. It carries the message, “QtoresQ: saving Q from Q.” Here, “Q” can represent us, or it can represent you. The song conveys the idea that we can become a source of strength for one another.
In many ways, our own situation felt like rescuing each other as well. KB and NINE reached out to JISUNG and asked him to join the project, and he took their hand. In doing so, they were able to bring JISUNG back after a long hiatus. On the other hand, JISUNG was able to fill in the parts that might have felt incomplete with just KB and NINE. Just as we became strength for one another, we hope that “QtoresQ” can also become a source of strength for those who listen to our music.
JISUNG This was a song I struggled with because I wasn’t used to producing a rough, gritty vocal tone. Thanks to the producer’s active direction, it felt like I was relearning how different facial expressions affect the sound when singing while recording the track. Through that process, I discovered how to produce the exact sound I wanted—even if it meant making less-than-flattering facial expressions. It ended up being a song that helped me grow a lot as a singer.
KB This reminds me of a funny episode from when we were recording. I was singing a soft, emotional part, and suddenly JISUNG casually pulled his pants down a bit. It turned out he had really dressed up that day and was wearing his pants super low. The image of his pants dropping right at that gentle moment stuck with us, so every time we heard the song afterward, we had to hold back our laughter.
