ZEROBASEONE leader SUNGHANBIN has released his first solo EP, DEAD:ALIVE, an eight-track project exploring self-transcendence through the title track “UNDEAD”.
Marking a new chapter for the ZEROBASEONE leader, the eight-track project explores the process of overcoming fear, breaking personal limitations and emerging as a new version of oneself.
Built around the concept of “beautiful destruction”, DEAD:ALIVE presents growth as a process that can require dismantling familiar versions of oneself. Rather than treating fear as something that must disappear before progress becomes possible, the album frames courage as the decision to keep moving forward despite uncertainty, pain and the possibility of failure.
The project is led by title track “UNDEAD”, which pairs powerful guitar riffs with grand choral arrangements and dynamic drums. Its central message revolves around willingly embracing hardship for oneself and others, presenting pain not as an ending but as a force that can drive personal transformation.
The EP opens with “Killin’ Me”, a track that confronts inner turmoil through tense, experimental production and the determination to turn suffering into strength. Elsewhere, “Insidious” examines the emotional consequences of holding onto a relationship beyond its end, while “3AM” explores the release of a more instinctive, uninhibited self. “Bloody Gravity” similarly examines an attraction that proves difficult to escape, using the metaphor of gravity to capture the pull between two people.
On “Other Side”, SUNGHANBIN turns towards the courage required to cross familiar boundaries and embrace an unknown future. The album also makes space for a more personal message with “섬광”, a fan song whose lyrics SUNGHANBIN helped write. Expressing gratitude to the fans who have helped illuminate his path, the track centres on a promise to become a source of light in return.
Closing track “Steal the Thunder” extends that sentiment beyond individual growth, depicting a determination to reclaim light even amid darkness and use it to help others find their way forward. Together, the songs trace a progression from confronting personal fears to finding strength in connection with others.
As ZEROBASEONE’s leader, SUNGHANBIN has built his reputation through his vocals, performance skills and versatility across different musical concepts. DEAD:ALIVE offers an opportunity to explore those strengths through a project centred on his individual artistic identity, moving between aggressive, guitar-driven production, dance-oriented sounds and more emotionally reflective moments.
With its focus on transformation, vulnerability and resilience, DEAD:ALIVE introduces a solo chapter that places SUNGHANBIN’s own interpretation of growth at the centre of its narrative.
