Red Velvet’s Irene & Seulgi To Release First Japanese EP ‘Cheetah’

By Isabel Miller

Irene and Seulgi of Red Velvet are set to make their sub-unit debut in Japan on November 4, 2026 with their first Japanese mini album, Cheetah.

The album consists of five songs: the eponymous title track “Cheetah,” “Fall 4 U,” “Love Anxiety,” “Wave,” and “Free.” According to SM Entertainment it will contain a variety of tones, with the bright, upbeat sound of “Cheetah” countered by a more mature, R&B-led approach throughout the B-sides.

As is typical with Japanese releases, each song will be unveiled several weeks prior to the physical album release. Cheetah will be available to stream and download digitally on September 14, allowing for promotion of the tracks before November 4 – primarily during the pair’s tour of Japan.

The ‘IRENE & SEULGI JAPAN TOUR 2026 -blank-’ kicks off in Fukuoka on September 19, five days after the album is released digitally. It will then see Irene and Seulgi visiting Hyogo, Osaka, Miyagi, Hiroshima, Aichi, and Kanagawa for a total of eight shows. They have performed as a sub-unit in Japan previously, with two shows in Tokyo as part of the ‘2025 IRENE & SEULGI Concert Tour [ BALANCE ] in ASIA,’ but this will be their first Japan-original tour.

A Japan-original album and tour marks a deliberate step up from Irene and Seulgi's previous activity in the country. K-pop's presence in the Japanese market has long been established, but the frequency of dedicated Japanese releases and tours is increasing – sub-units included. Music from K-pop acts consistently places on Oricon's Weekly and Daily charts, and companies are responding to that demand with more targeted investment. For Irene and Seulgi, a Japan-exclusive tour signals that the market is being taken seriously as a standalone priority, not just an extension of a wider Asia run.

Each venue holds a capacity of approximately 2,000-5,000 attendees, prioritising smaller cities this time around – a reflection of their nationwide demand which will also allow for a more intimate atmosphere outside of the arena-level venues the full line-up is typically seen within.

Cheetah will be the duo’s third mini album overall, and also acts as confirmation that they will continue to promote together. Their first mini album, Monster, was released in 2020, and their second mini album TILT followed five years later. Now, in 2026, the gap between releases has narrowed with new music and tours being announced consistently on top of promotions for Red Velvet’s Velvet Summer.

These previous duo releases have stepped away from the brighter dynamic often associated with Red Velvet and towards a mature, sultry concept – as promotions commence, it will be interesting to see if this tone continues with their Japanese music.
