To celebrate WHIB’s comeback with CHERRY PIE, we caught up with each member individually.
For UGEON, performance is about creating a connection that goes beyond simply delivering the song as it was recorded. As WHIB’s rapper, he looks for ways to raise the energy in real time, whether through added vocal details or direct interaction with the audience. That instinct has become even more important as he explores new approaches to his own voice, including the more prominent use of singing rap in WHIB’s recent music. On stage, UGEON trusts the preparation that has gone into a performance and allows himself to believe he is the best; once it is over, he switches perspective, monitoring himself objectively and looking for ways to improve.
That balance between confidence and self-criticism continues to shape the performer he wants to become.
As the team’s rapper, how do you approach energising a live performance?
UGEON To raise the energy of the song, I sometimes add vocal doubling that isn’t in the original track or interact with the audience to bring more energy to the performance.
This album pushed you into new genres and roles. What challenged you most?
Unlike our previous albums, this album has a lot more singing rap, so I think the most challenging part was practicing and recording with a different vocal approach than before.
How do you balance confidence on stage with staying grounded offstage?
On stage, I always trust the amount of practice I’ve put in and perform with the mindset that I’m the best. Once I come off stage, I monitor myself objectively and look for areas I can improve, which helps me stay grounded offstage.
What part of your artistry do you feel is still developing?
I think I’m continuing to improve at enjoying myself more naturally on stage and communicating more with the audience while performing, and I believe that’s something I’ll keep developing further.
