ILLIT Becomes Fastest Overseas Female Artist to Hit Triple Platinum in Japan with “Magnetic”
By Isabel Miller
ILLIT’s debut title track “Magnetic” has earned a Triple Platinum certification in Japan, according to the Recording Industry Association of Japan on October 2.
The song met the certification criteria in the streaming category, surpassing 300 million cumulative streams on Oricon’s Weekly Streaming Ranking as of August 2026 – in only 101 weeks. In doing so, ILLIT has set a new record as the fastest track by an overseas female artist in history to surpass 300 million streams and gain a Triple Platinum certification.
This is not the first recording breaking milestone for the song in Japan. “Magnetic” was released in March 2024, and three months later it had already surpassed 100 million streams and earned a Platinum certification. With that achievement, ILLIT broke the record for the shortest time taken for a female group song to surpass 100 million streams in the market. On Billboard JAPAN’s Hot 100 chart, “Magnetic” stands at a tie with ILLIT’s own “It’s Me” as the longest-charting K-pop girl group song inside the top 10 this decade at 12 weeks.
Each of these accolades showcases the popularity of “Magnetic” and ILLIT across the country, a popularity that now rivals the biggest K-pop artists, and the meteoric yet sustained pace at which it has grown. ILLIT entered the music industry with “Magnetic” as their debut title track, leading the first mini album SUPER REAL ME. It spurred the group to fame immediately upon release. That success is already remarkable, as it broke records on domestic and global charts without any prior fans to back it up.
Even more remarkable, then, is the song’s longevity. 101 weeks on from its release, "Magnetic" is still breaking records – and it isn’t the only ILLIT song to do so. As is typical when an artist has such a major hit, especially so early on in their career, there was a chance that “Magnetic” would lead to the group being seen as a one-hit wonder. However, their viral 2026 release “It’s Me” has reached great heights internationally and is matching “Magnetic”’s initial charting streak on Spotify and Apple Music. In Japan in particular, ILLIT’s first Japanese release “Almond Chocolate" has also received a Platinum certification, and debut Korean B-side “Lucky Girl Syndrome” was granted a Gold certification.
ILLIT completed the sold-out ILLIT Live ‘PRESS START♥︎’ Tour in July 2026, drawing 60,000 fans across 11 performances, and have already announced dates for the ‘PRESS START♥︎’ ENCORE in Japan in December. Ultimately, the combination of streaming figures and touring figures indicates that ILLIT will remain a permanent fixture amongst the top K-pop artists in Japan. With the Japanese market standing as the largest international music market for K-pop, their position in Japan reflects their potential for a long, prominent career in both the domestic and global sides of the industry.
Additionally, this Triple Platinum certification comes shortly before ILLIT are scheduled to release their fifth mini album ‘BREAK EVEN,’ which comes out on October 26. One of three concept films has already been shared, as has the tracklist and the announcement of new title track “You’re Under Arrest.” A record sets the project up for a big release day in Japan.
ILLIT’s BREAK EVEN will be available to stream and download on October 26, with presave and preorder links live now on the group’s social media.
