Comeback Corner

82MAJOR, NEXZ, LEE CHAEYEON & More

Read on for our picks of the week.

This week’s releases are all about moving and grooving as nearly every track puts K-pop’s EDM and house craze on full display, while also showing steady growth and maturity from groups who are usually playful and rowdy. Whether it's the suave new style donned by 82MAJOR or the sweeping disco nostalgia from Lee Chaeyeon, K-pop is having a euphoric moment lately.

82MAJOR - “Sign”

When most people think of 82MAJOR, they think of the boy group’s loud and aggressive hip-hop-driven tracks, with a heavy emphasis on swagger with a rambunctious attitude. Last year, the group played around with EDM and house for the first time, but now, they’re dialing it way down with their slickest, most laidback song yet. Taking a more minimalistic approach, “Sign” seamlessly blends 82MAJOR’s “cool-guy” aesthetic with a funky, R&B groove that slides across the beat rather than pounces on it. With equally smooth choreography and a more refined visual style, this unexpected switch-up fits the group like a glove.

NEXZ - “Mmchk”

Kicking K-pop’s ever-growing house trend into high gear, JYP boy group NEXZ takes things to the next level with “Mmchk.” Filled to the brim with energetic beats and a bass-driven tempo, the track doesn’t let up for a single second, constantly pulsing with a steady thump that could easily be heard outside a packed nightclub. Just as “Mmchk” marches to the beat of its drum, so does NEXZ, with the group making up the titular word as a statement – choosing their own path with an attitude that’s both confident and undefinable rather than forcing themselves into a box.

TWS - “You, You”

Six-member boy group TWS continues its exploration of “boyhood pop” in their latest title track, “You, You.” While the group is known for its bright and youthful energy, this particular releases sees the boys begin to mature and tackle two themes they’ve never explored in depth until now: love and romance. Venturing into a funky house groove with an R&B tinge, “You, You” hits all the sweet spots of a dance-driven beat with an infectious melody, making it an instant replay among this week’s comebacks.

Lee Chaeyeon - “No Tears On The Dancefloor”

Among the many EDM and house-influenced K-pop songs that have come out recently, soloist and former IZ*ONE member Lee Chaeyeon takes listeners back to the disco era with “No Tears On The Dancefloor.” Described as a retro Nu-disco/dance-pop anthem, the title track intricately weaves the emotional embrace of dramatic strings with fun-loving club elements designed to feel both cinematic and everlasting. While the lyrics paint a story of resilience and dancing the pain away, the music is saying something entirely different – almost like convincing yourself everything’s okay, but deep inside, you know that’s not entirely the case.

YAOCHEN - “Roll The Dice”

In case you haven’t been introduced to him yet, meet Yaochen – a Chinese singer, rapper, and songwriter under Fanling Culture, a subsidiary of JYP Entertainment. The singer just released his latest single, “Roll The Dice,” along with his second mini album and enlisted labelmate and Stray Kids member Bang Chan as co-writer of the title track. Capitalizing on the industry’s EDM kick, “Roll The Dice” is the definition of a party anthem, the type that calls for fist-pumping and running to the dance floor as soon as the first beat drops. Lyrically, the song encourages listeners to take a chance and literally roll the dice when it comes to facing life’s tough choices, because standing in your decisions with confidence is worth whatever the outcome may be – as long as it makes you happy.
