Yves, ANDBLE, XLOV & MORE
Read on for our picks of the week.
By Chyenne Tatum
This week’s K-pop releases center around sounds that are more sensual, provoking, and hypnotic in nature, with four of the featured five tracks from Yves, AND2BLE, XLOV, and ALPHA DRIVE ONE exploring themes of anxiety, attraction, the thrill of the chase, and a love as deep as the ocean. ILLIT, however, brings a sprinkle of irritation, anger, and embarrassment through an infectiously danceable B-side track.
Yves - “Hysteric”
Six months after her fourth EP Nail, soloist and LOONA member Yves has officially returned with her double digital single, Hysteric / Adam. While both tracks deal with themes of anxiety, the title track, “Hysteric,” explores persistent anxiety and a feeling of losing control in an evocative, dark, and seductive soundscape, while “Adam” represents the aftermath. Sonically, “Hysteric” is a deep house-based title track built over a looping, distorted bassline and repetitive synth plucks, creating an entrancing atmosphere that lingers until you’re hooked. From Yves’ soft, alluring vocals sweeping over the melody to the rhythmic pulsing of the bass, the track lures you in — only to seal the hatch a second later.
AND2BLE - “Potion”
After debuting in May with their first mini album Sequence 01: Curiosity, five-member boy group AND2BLE is back with the second part of their saga, Sequence 02: Attraction. While the album’s title track, “French Kissing,” is a hypnotic tropical R&B track, their sleek, house-influenced B-side, “Potion,” is already a standout among fans. With a slightly electric piano-driven intro, the track slowly builds from atmospheric and dreamy to a restrained sexiness, like “French Kissing,” but with a much heavier club vibe. “Bounce that, move that / Gimme that motion / Need that, feel that / Wanna taste that / Potion,” the members sing in a husky tone before transitioning into the addictive “Ya, ya, ya,” loop of the main hook. If “French Kissing” is the main course, then “Potion” is the dessert that makes the entire meal feel worthwhile.
XLOV - “Cat Move”
Whenever XLOV makes a comeback, you can always expect out-of-this-world sonic and visual elements, just anticipating what they have up their sleeve next. For their third EP, i=! (Equals I), the “genderless” group delves deeper into their more provocative persona with the slinky B-side track, “Cat Move.” Opening the album with a mesmerizing electronic dance number, “Cat Move” is intentionally seductive and teasing, like a cat stalking its prey or playing with its food before devouring it. “All night long / I stay sharp, then strike the moment you let your guard down / I’m right above your head, I know everything that’s on your mind,” Rui sings before the chorus.
Conversely, fans have pointed out how this track could also double as a vampire concept, especially since the fantastical night creatures are commonly associated with sexuality and eroticism — which “Cat Move” embodies like a charm. With Halloween just around the corner, there’s no better time to let XLOV’s dark side take over a little while.
ALPHA DRIVE ONE - “Talk to me”
Rookie boy group ALPHA DRIVE ONE has had a great year since their January debut. After releasing their second mini album, UNBREAKABLE : 少年BEAST, the eight-member group has returned with their latest digital single, “Talk to me.” While their previous tracks have explored dance, synth, and electro-pop — along with hip-hop and hints of R&B — “Talk to me” goes full indie alt-pop, exploring a more sensual side than we’ve seen before. With a refreshing synth sound and oceanic elements intertwined, the members dive deep into a love that slowly pulls them under, like the ocean tides threatening to swallow them completely. The overall ambiance is both soothing and fascinating, creating a bottomless pit of longing and thirst that has yet to be quenched. If you think you knew ALPHA DRIVE ONE, think again.
ILLIT - “More”
Following the release of their fourth EP, Mamihlapinatapai, in April, and their digital single, “I Got Your Back,” in July, the five-member girl group is back with their fifth EP, Break Even. Thematically, the album follows the “break-even point in a relationship, when the emotional investment no longer justifies the effort.” The four tracks follow that emotional progression from start to finish — from the realization that the supposed romance was only in their minds, to embarrassment turned into irritation, the decision to end the relationship, and finally, introducing a new romantic interest to end on an optimistic note.
ILLIT’s hyper-pop B-side, “More,” is about embarrassment turning into irritation, depicting “emotional fatigue and frustration from dealing with a partner's mixed signals, breaking away from the album's usual romantic narrative to demand clear feedback.” Underneath the track’s playful, energetic nature, the members lash out at their significant other to deflect and project. “A roller coaster ride on a false assumption / Another yummy yum message left on read / You shouldn’t have let me get the wrong idea in the first place,” the members sing in the pre-chorus, before repeating how mad they are. Apparently, ILLIT is not the group to anger — but at least we get a fun song out of it.
