Dayoung, AKMU, RESCENE & More
Read on for our picks of the week.
Dayoung
Between the wispy ballads of sibling duo AKMU and the luscious pop record from WJSN’s Dayoung, this week’s K-pop releases are very springtime-friendly. Whether it’s lounging and catching up on a good book in the park or planning a night out with friends, there’s something here for everyone.
Dayoung - “What’s a girl to do”
Following her massive unexpected hit with “body” in 2025, WJSN member Dayoung has returned for her second digital single, “What’s a girl to do.” In this bouncy dance-pop track, the singer plays coy as she purposely sends small signals and hints as an excuse to linger in her love interest’s mind. “Now I’m pulling my hair out, hiding my clothes in the back of your room / So I can come over and pick up my things, but it’s just an excuse,” she sings in the infectious hook. As she continues playfully strategizing these “chance encounters,” listeners are encouraged to wonder about the complex psychology of love and the lengths one will go to just to stay close to that special someone.
AKMU - “Joy, Sorrow, A Beautiful Heart”
After parting ways with their longtime label YG Entertainment in November 2025, the sibling duo known as AKMU is back and better than ever. Now signed to their own independent label, Cember of Entertainment (translated from Yeonggam-ui Saemteo), the two musicians have released their latest single, “Joy, Sorrow, A Beautiful Heart.” Opening with a soft piano, the calm yet ethereal track explores the journey of embracing one’s sorrow and allowing it to run its course rather than pushing it away — that’s when you know you’re truly alive. “Nothing in the world is better than this / Cloudy days, sunny days, aching days / Fit them together piece by piece and you’ll see the whole picture.”
RESCENE - “Runaway”
Portraying the desire for freedom under a rigid life of surveillance and restrictions, girl group RESCENE attempts to break free and spread their wings in “Runaway.” “There’s nowhere to go, just keep circling, oh / In a dream that I’ve faded from / Stuck on an endless wheel, echoes ringing everywhere / Beyond the wall, let’s break this fate,” members Zena and Woni sing in the pre-chorus.
The dreamy synth-pop track highlights the members’ soft vocals while maintaining a fleeting dance beat and guitar motif, emphasizing a new sonic direction and determination to solidify their place among fifth-gen girl groups.
AMPERS&ONE - “GOD”
Combining dark, mysterious dance-pop with an Asian flair is AMPERS&ONE with “GOD,” the title track off their newest EP, DEFINITION. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the concept can be likened to Saja Boys, the seductive demons from the hit Netflix movie Kpop Demon Hunters, as the AMPERS&ONE members mix trendy trap beats with traditional Korean strings of gayageum (plucked zither). During the group’s press conference, leader Kamden described this duality as Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) hip-hop. “You better bow, I take off my crown and put on that / GOD.”
KEYVITUP - “KEYVITUP”
Debuting under Jaejoong’s independent agency, iNKODE Entertainment, five-member boy group KEYVITUP (a wordplay on “keep it up”) released their first self-titled EP and title track of the same name. Musically, the song is heavily inspired by ‘90s hip-hop, coinciding with the era when Jaejoong was a young idol himself as an original member of TVXQ, albeit more pop than hip-hop. Between the slick rap verses and smooth vocals in the pre-chorus, KEYVITUP is definitely a rookie group to keep an eye on.
hrtz.wav - “NINETEEN”
Band music has become increasingly popular in Korea, particularly in the K-pop scene, with several instrumental bands debuting over the last few years. The latest is five-piece band, hrtz.wav (pronounced “hearts wave”), who were formed through the Mnet survival show, Steal Hearts Club, after becoming finalists in 2025. Reflecting a new wave of band music for the youth, hrtz.wav has officially debuted with the pop-rock anthem, “NINETEEN.” Lyrically, the song reflects on memories of being nineteen years old, with singer Riaan leading the charge on the vocal front and every member credited as a lyricist. Fresh, fun, and full of heart.
