DAY6’s leader Sungjin has finally made his much anticipated solo comeback on November 5, 2024. This solo debut album is titled ‘30’ which borrows from Sungjin’s thought processes as he begins a new chapter of his life after entering his 30s.

“Check Pattern” serves as the title track for the album. To keep up the anticipation for the album, four sets of concept photos were released. The first two sets were “Day” and “Evening.” Today, we shall see the other two, namely, “Night” and “Dawn.” Like a day split into four time periods, Sungjin’s four sets of concept photos reflect different moods. In the “Night” version, we find Sungjin once again in a subway. In the first photo, he is standing and peering at something above, perhaps waiting for his destination station. In the next photo, we find him leaning against the subway carriage wall and looking pensively at the camera. Next to him, there is a small poster with the initials “SJ,” the words “Check Pattern,” and other small typography. This poster is clearly about the title track from the album.

FInally, we have “Dawn.” Here, in the first photo, we see Sungjin in the subway carriage, but he has a huge teddy bear to keep him company. He is dressed casually in a plain white T-shirt, a striped cardigan, and a pair of relaxed-fit jeans. There are pillows and fluffy bales next to Sungjin. In the second photo, we find him again looking at the camera with a serious expression on his face. The subway carriage and the windows are painted with cloud motifs, lending a dreamy look to the background setting. Sungjin’s attire has changed to a set of comfortable pajamas. If we look closely to the left-hand side, we can see a few words like “Don’t wanna do anything” on the wall. Seeing the state of Sungjin’s morning after a hectic day, it is understood that he doesn’t want to do anything. Rest is pivotal after all!

Overall, in all these four sets of concept photos, we see Sungjin trying to emulate the daily life of an average working class person. The struggles and the crises that one faces as one slowly ages is something that can be understood only when you go through it yourself. Until then, we can only empathize and sympathize with others and try to make sense of things as best as we can. Sungjin’s solo debut album 30 feels like a slice of life album for those in their 30s.
