WEi:The group that stood strong through all its troubles

WEi is one those rookie groups whose members have had a rather interesting time of debuting and re-debuting. The members were a part of reality shows and other groups before finally coming together as WEi. WEi debuted in October 2020 with six members Daehyeon, Donghan, Yongha, Yohan, Seokhwa, and Junseo.

The group’s name WEi combines the idea behind “WE” and “I” wherein the members are one and they will make music as one. The fans of the group are called RUi. “RU” is the 16th of 28 constellations. The name also translates to “Are you I?” wherein the members and the fans ask each other the question to confirm their identity as each other’s reflection, as each other’s destiny. Following its debut, the group has regularly released new music in the form of EPs or singles, and Yohan and Donghan are also known for their solo activities as a solo singer and an actor. WEi has also been especially active with releasing music in Japanese. The group has released two EPs so far and also conducted a tour in Japan earlier this year.

WEi’s music is synonymous with hip-hop and synth based beat, with an occasional sprinkle of dance pop and RnB. The group has proven its versatility by adapting to a new style with each comeback. Some of the notable tracks by WEi include “Too Bad,” “Spray,” “Overdrive,” and “Wave.”The members have occasionally tried their hand in co-writing and co-composing the tracks, further giving proof to their talents as musicians.

Following WEi’s latest single “LOVE2YOU”’s release, it was revealed that WEI’s leader Jang Dae Hyun will be enlisting in the military. But, on October 2, the company announced that Dae Hyun has received a detention certificate after a physical examination and they will announce a new date for his enlistment soon. It can be safe to assume that the members will slowly begin to go on a hiatus for their mandatory military enlistments. Hence the absence of new music from the group for over nine months now.
