Somi: A Multicultural Icon

Jeon Somi, born Ennik Somi Douma, has spent her whole life as blend of influences. Her family moved from Ontario, Canada to South Korea when she was just six months old. Growing up, she faced bullying due to her mixed ethnicity, which pushed her to fit in more. Fast forward to her school years, she graduated from Hanlim Multi Art School, majoring in Practical Music and Vocal. Influenced by icons like Rihanna and 2NE1's Park Bom, Somi always had her eyes set on the pop star life. Her unique multicultural background and early exposure to both Western and Korean pop culture gave her an edge in the crowded entertainment industry.

Somi’s hustle started early. She auditioned at various entertainment companies in South Korea, making notable TV appearances and participating in a children’s Taekwondo demonstration by 2013. She joined JYP Entertainment as a trainee in 2015 and even featured in a Got7 music video. Though she didn’t make it in the survival program Sixteen, she bounced back by winning first place in Produce 101 in 2016. This victory catapulted her into stardom with the project girl group I.O.I, which became a massive hit.

After I.O.I disbanded in 2017, Somi signed a solo contract with JYP Entertainment but switched lanes in 2018 to join The Black Label, a YG Entertainment subsidiary. Her solo debut single “Birthday” dropped in 2019, racking up millions of views and climbing the charts. Somi kept the momentum going with her first studio album, XOXO, in 2021. The lead single “Dumb Dumb” smashed records, giving her a top ten solo hit.

At The Black Label, Somi gained more creative control over her music. She wrote her first self-composed track “Outta My Head,” featured in her debut single album. Her songwriting process is super unique—she records songs in English and Korean to make sure the vibes hit in both languages. With Teddy Park as her mentor, she’s been fine-tuning her artistic voice, blending her experiences into her music.

Beyond music, Somi is a fourth-degree black belt in Taekwondo, thanks to her dad. She’s also been recognized as a multicultural rep, even taking part in the 102nd anniversary of the Korean Declaration of Independence. Her fashion game is on point, often DIY-ing her outfits to express her creative side. Somi’s journey is all about blending her diverse heritage with her K-pop stardom, making her a true Gen Z icon.
