Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “I’m Depressed and That’s Ok” by gate

Acceptance is hard. I can’t tell if the title of this song is actually acceptance of being depressed or if it means something else, but the song certainly doesn’t sound like someone dwelling in their depression or feeling trapped like many songs about depression. Despite what the title might have you think, this track is an upbeat, synthy groove full of great stuff. There’s a lot of good vibes sonically here, and you’d be forgiven for forgetting the title has anything to do with sadness.
There are a lot of great points, but the sound design here is incredible. Vocals are pitch-shifted and warped to oblivion, and the last chorus of the track brings in this incredible detuned piano that adds a wonderfully crunchy texture to the mix. It’s clear there was a lot of attention to detail in this track, and it pays off over and over again.
