Collab Corner: BLACKPINK x Lady Gaga

Did you know American pop star Lady Gaga and K-pop girl group BLACKPINK have worked on a song together? Back in 2020, Lady Gaga released her album, Chromatica, which included the promotional single “Sour Candy.” If you’re a hardcore BLINK, you probably already knew this, as the group have performed the track a few times at live events, but other, more casual fans probably weren’t aware this connection even existed!

The track is an upbeat, dancy, electropop style song, and has lyrics that suggest a playful, yet rough lover. The song was apparently inspired by Sour Patch Kids candy and the ad campaign that shows off the candy’s sweet and sour sides. Both Gaga and BLACKPINK were excited to work on the track together, as they saw it as an opportunity to expand their creative horizons and work together as mutual fans of each others’ work. They said it felt like a celebration of girl power and came together better than imagined.

Although the song didn’t score too high on any major charts, it saw praise from a number of sources. Many critics felt the lyrics were pretty simple, but that the simplicity was a feature that helped the track be a solid pop track. A remix for the album Dawn of Chromatica, removed some of the vocal tracks from BLACKPINK, but included contributions from Shygirl and Mura Masa. The track takes a slightly different tone, but fans still have expressed enjoyment of the song.

What do you think: should these two collaborate again? Was their first track too good to be topped? What about the remix?
