“YG” by XY is Edgy, Rock-infused J-pop

XY emerged in 2023 as a promising addition to the music industry. They were born out of the innovative Yoshiki Superstar Project X. Spearheaded by the legendary Japanese musician and producer YOSHIKI, the talent competition/show captivated audiences. The auditions, aimed at discovering the next wave of global music stars, kicked off in March 2022 with a dual focus on forming a standout band and a dynamic boys group. After months of anticipation, the complete audition experience was finally unveiled on Hulu Japan starting October 2, 2022.

The auditions boasted an impressive lineup of guest judges, including international musical legends like Gene Simmons of KISS, opera sensation Sarah Brightman, choreographer Travis Payne, and vocal coach Roger Love. The process promised to be anything but conventional, and it lived up to that promise.

XY was a hybrid rock band and dance-vocal troupe that emerged from this show. Mentored and produced by the iconic Yoshiki, they demonstrated versatility by operating both as a unified group and as specialized units. Despite a measured release schedule – a trademark of Yoshiki’s approach – XY made an impact with their sole debut track, which received acclaim for its quality.

Now, after a prolonged anticipation, XY's units are poised to unveil new material in June of 2024. Leading the charge is the rock band faction, fronted by the dynamic vocal duo Gai and Karma. Their latest offering, "YG," capitalizes on a straightforward rock ethos while injecting distinctive elements such as Furutatsu's compelling violin work. In Japan, where rock maintains a formidable presence, "YG" finds a natural home with its robust guitar-driven sound and compelling vocal deliveries.

Their edgier approach enhances its standout qualities amidst similar rock efforts. Yoshiki’s involvement, while not in songwriting, lends a timeless allure to the production, showcasing his adeptness in uplifting arrangements that resonate across generations.  "YG" seems poised to earn a lasting place on playlists worldwide.
