Sunggyu: INFINITE Potential


Kim Sung-kyu, widely known as Sunggyu, is a South Korean singer, actor, and leader of the renowned boy band INFINITE. Debuting with INFINITE in 2010 under Woollim Entertainment, Sunggyu's journey in the music industry has been marked by his distinctive voice and his ability to take on a variety of musical and performance roles.

Sunggyu's early life was shaped by his strong determination to pursue music, despite initial resistance from his parents. Growing up in Jeonju, South Korea, he was passionate about rock music and played in a school band. His drive eventually led him to Seoul, where he faced multiple rejections before securing a spot at Woollim Entertainment, thanks in part to a coincidence with a manager from his favorite band, Nell. This determination set the stage for his role in INFINITE, where he became not only the group's leader but also its main vocalist, helping to shape the group’s sound and success.

His solo career began in 2012 with the release of his EP Another Me, which demonstrated his versatility and ability to shine as a solo artist. His second EP, 27, released in 2015, is a standout, produced by Kim Jong-wan of Nell, further reflecting his deep-rooted admiration for rock music. The album debuted at number one on the Gaon Album Chart and found international success, peaking on the US Billboard World Albums chart. His singles "The Answer" and "Kontrol" achieved significant popularity, reinforcing his status as a leading figure in K-pop’s evolving landscape.Throughout his career, Sunggyu has continuously balanced his roles in INFINITE and his solo pursuits, all while gaining acclaim for his contributions to both projects.

In addition to music, Sunggyu has made a name for himself in various fields, including musical theater and television. His acting debut came in 2012, and he has since taken on numerous roles in stage productions, such as Gwanghwamun Sonata and In The Heights. His performances in these musicals have shown his versatility as a performer. Moreover, he has appeared on several popular Korean variety shows, further establishing his presence in the entertainment industry outside of music.

After a brief hiatus due to mandatory military service, Sunggyu returned in 2020, continuing to pursue both group and solo endeavors. In 2021, he left Woollim Entertainment but remained a member of INFINITE, eventually establishing INFINITE Company to manage the group's activities. Sunggyu’s career exemplifies resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to his craft, making him one of the most respected figures in the K-pop industry.
