Two years after the world lost Moonbin, the members of ASTRO have come together with an extended family of artists who knew him best for a rare kind of musical remembrance. Their new single “Memory of the Moon” stands apart for its quiet reverence and emotional clarity; a way of saying what couldn’t be said in time.

Released on the second anniversary of Moonbin’s passing, the song unites voices across the K-pop community: VIVIZ, Minhyuk, Kihyun and I.M of MONSTA X, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Mingyu, DK and Seungkwan of SEVENTEEN, HELLO GLOOM, Rocky, Choi Yoojung, Kim Doyeon, SF9’s Chani, Stray Kids’ Bang Chan, and Moon Sua of Billlie – Moonbin’s younger sister. That so many artists came forward isn’t surprising, as Moonbin was widely known for his warmth, generosity, and quiet leadership; someone who made space for others long before the spotlight turned to him.

“Memory of the Moon” is built on lyrics written by ASTRO members MJ, JinJin, Cha Eun Woo, and Sanha, along with former member Rocky. The songwriting is intimate without being sentimental, steeped in imagery that feels deliberately soft: closed eyes under moonlight, old paths once walked together, doors that might still open in dreams. “When the moon door opens, will you be standing there?” they ask, again and again. It’s a question with no answer – and that’s the point.

Moonbin’s sister, Moon Sua, delivers one of the song’s most emotionally unguarded moments: “I love you so much and I’m sorry,” she sings. “I shout, let’s meet again no matter what.” Her words land like something unscripted: raw, necessary, deeply human.

Fantagio, ASTRO’s agency, described the song as “a letter from his friends to Moonbin,” and the sincerity of that framing is undeniable. There’s no gloss or commercial agenda here, just a shared language of memory, created by the people who knew him best.

Moonbin passed away on April 19, 2023, at the age of 25. The circumstances – widely reported as a likely suicide – left fans and peers reeling. More than a tribute, “Memory of the Moon” is an invitation to sit with the heartache, to remember without needing resolution. And in that space, it becomes a reminder: of Moonbin’s light, of the people carrying it forward, and of the quiet, necessary work of remembering.
