Kim Jae-hwan: Vocalist of Your Dreams

Kim Jae-hwan’s journey in the K-pop industry is a fascinating one, filled with moments of resilience, transformation, and versatility. He first gained attention as a contestant on Korea’s Got Talent in 2012 but didn't reach the finals. Undeterred, Kim pursued his musical career, joining the band ShelRock, which frequently performed in Hongdae. Although the band's debut never came to fruition, he continued to hone his craft, appearing on Vocal War: God's Voice, where he showcased his impressive vocal abilities. His big break came in 2017 when he competed in Produce 101 Season 2, finishing fourth and joining the highly successful project group Wanna One. The group's meteoric rise to fame set the stage for Kim’s solo career following their disbandment.

Kim’s transition into a solo artist in 2019 was marked by his debut EP Another, featuring the ballad "Begin Again." Known for his powerful vocals, Kim initially focused on ballad-heavy releases, such as Moment and The Letter, where he demonstrated his strength as a vocalist and composer. Songs like "The Time I Need" and "Unforgettable" further cemented his place in the industry as a skilled ballad singer. Despite his successes in the ballad genre, Kim felt the need to explore different musical styles, leading to a significant shift in his artistic direction.

In 2022, Kim released his EP Empty Dream, a project that further displayed his growth as a musician. However, the real turning point in his career came in 2023 with the release of J.A.M. (Journey Above Music). This album allowed Kim to embrace a more upbeat and funky R&B sound, showcasing a different side of his personality. The title track "Lucky!" embodied this new direction, with its groovy dance-pop vibe and collaboration with iKon’s Bobby. Kim explained that while he had primarily focused on ballads, he felt it was time to reveal his more cheerful and energetic persona, which had long been hidden behind his more reserved image.

The J.A.M. era saw Kim evolve not just musically but also as a performer. He honed his dancing skills, confident in his ability to deliver powerful high-pitched vocals while executing energetic choreography. His ambition to be recognized as a versatile artist led him to cite inspirations like Psy and Bruno Mars, both known for their stage presence and ability to effortlessly shift between genres. Kim’s commitment to his craft was further evidenced by his dedication to physical fitness, losing weight and cutting out distractions to focus entirely on his comeback.

Kim Jae-hwan’s career continues to evolve, as demonstrated by his recent announcement of his military enlistment. Set to join the military band in July 2023, Kim’s decision comes after renewing his contract with his agency, WAKEONE. With his recent mini-album I Adore and its title track "Amaid," he leaves fans with yet another impressive body of work before his hiatus. Kim’s journey from an aspiring singer on talent shows to a multi-talented solo artist has been marked by perseverance, growth, and an unwavering passion for music, making him a unique and inspiring figure in the K-pop world.
