Kang Daniel: Truly a Star and True to Himself

Kang Daniel: Truly a Star and True to Himself

From his time on the survival show Produce 101 to his time in Wanna One to his career as a solo artist, Kang Daniel is a true K-pop star while staying true to himself. Throughout his career, he’s continually evolved as he maintains self-expression and creates good branding, all while staying connected with his fans.

Kang Daniel loved dancing since he was young, even participating in youth dance competitions like Busan City Kids, where he and his teammate beat Jimin (who later became part of BTS) and future group member Park Woo-jin. Kang Daniel attended Peniel Arts High School where he studied modern dance with an emphasis on ballet.

In 2017, Kang Daniel gained national attention when he competed in season two of Produce 101. He was the first-place winner of the survival show and became part of the boy group Wanna One. At the time, the group was a major player in the K-pop world. After leaving Wanna One in 2019, Kang Daniel took a brief hiatus before launching his solo career under his self-established label, KONNECT Entertainment. Creating his own label allowed him a lot of creative freedom.

Kang’s official debut as a solo artist started with his EP, Color on Me. The EP’s lead single, “What Are You Up To” led to Kang getting his first solo music show win. The MV is full of amazing videography and beautiful patterns in the backgrounds. Plus, Kang Daniel’s just got smooth vocals and a charismatic presence—what’s not to love? The fact that he captivated fans right from the beginning shows that being authentic pays off.

His most popular song by far is “Antidote,” which not only highlights how Kang has grown as an artist, but also dives deeper into healing, all through a beautiful MV centered around mirrors. It’s a must-see. It was probably hard to start his own label and break into a solo career, but songs like “Antidote” show how it was all worth it.

Not only is Kang a good singer and dancer—he’s a businessman. Through his label, he has since taken other artists under his wing, managing people like Chancellor, Yuju, and We Dem Boyz. Unfortunately, the label experienced a shareholder embezzling funds, and KONNECT Entertainment closed down in mid-2024.

Despite his label shutting down, Kang Daniel continues to make music. He’s also been the center of a documentary, an MC, the writer of a webtoon, a model, and more. Through it all, Kang Daniel has stayed close to his fandom, DANITY. He’s remained transparent with them about mental health and staying human.

Overall, Kang Daniel is a role model for other solo artists wanting to break free of the K-pop mold and do what they want to do. And it looks like he’s not slowing down.
