Daily Non-K-Pop Spotlight: “Sober” by Backwoods03, MOLDY, and Changyunflug

Ok, so we know we like to showcase a lot of music here that’s far from your typical pop stylings. Although most of our picks fall solidly within the kinds of indie, rock, and electronic music that, even if it’s not your favorite, you could understand someone enjoying. And then sometimes our picks are just plain weird.

 

Frankly speaking, this is one of those weird days. “Sober” is the kind of song that defies all description because there’s just nothing else that sounds like this. Part atonal EDM and part mumble-rap, the only tracks that sound anything like this are the other songs from the EP it comes from. ‘Alien’ is an understatement, and there’s a certain vaguely threatening aura about the track. From pitch-shifted vocal lines to abrasive synth tones, this track is truly pushing the boundaries of what a two-minute song can be. It’s in a class unto itself, and we love it. Make no mistake, we’re aware more than most of the oddities of this song, but it scratches a strange itch we didn’t even know we had. Well done guys.
