Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “Shining” by JAURIM

JAURIM (자우림) has etched an indelible mark on South Korea's music scene since 1997 when they had their debut and subsequent breakthrough. With an impressive discography of alternative rock anthems and soul-stirring ballads, they’ve resonated deeply with the millennial generation. The band is made up of vocalist Kim Yuna, guitarist Lee Sun-kyu, and bassist Kim Jin-man. They are South Korea’s longest running co-ed band, and acclaimed as one of the nation's most iconic rock acts.

Today’s non-K-pop spotlight song falls in the ballad side of their sound. Their name means “purple rainforest,” and this song captures that: tranquil but dreamy, with psychedelic flourishes (some of the guitar tones on this one get trippy). Led by subdued drums and incessant, rich piano, everything serves Kim Yuna's incomparable, hauntingly beautiful voice, a vessel that effortlessly navigates through the spectrum of the song’s emotions.
