WJSN (Cosmic Girls): Celestial Talent

WJSN, also known as Cosmic Girls, is a shining example of a girl group that—despite finding less success than its generational peers like BLACKPINK and Red Velvet—still deserves a spotlight. By blending their ethereal concept, diversity of talent, and comradery, WJSN is sure to see more future success.
WJSN debuted on February 25, 2016, under Starship Entertainment and Yuehua Entertainment. The group originally debuted with 12 members, adding a thirteenth member (Yeonjung) later that year. Chinese members Xuanji, Cheng Xiao, and Meiqi left the group in 2023 after a 5-year hiatus, becoming actresses in China. The girl group’s remaining members are Seola, Bona, EXY, Soobin, Luda, Dawson, Eunseo, Yeoreum, Dayoung, and Yeonjung.

The group’s members were divided into different subunits. The first unit, Wonder Unit, was composed of Cheng Xiao, Bona, and Dayoung. The second, Joy Unit, was made up of Xuanyi, Eunseo, and Yeoreum. The third unit, Sweet Unit, included Seola, Exy, and Soobin. Finally, the group’s fourth unit had Meiqi, Luda, and Dawon in it, forming the Natural Unit.
The group’s concept has been both a benefit and a hindrance to WJSN. Reflective of their English name—Cosmic Girls—the group takes on a celestial, almost mystical concept. The ethereal, synthpop sounds the group produces are not as trendy or energetic as the sounds of more popular bands like BLACKPINK. For example, “Done,” is a beautiful song with almost haunting reverb effects, giving the feeling of being in space or underwater.
The group has a lot of individual talent. Aside from being wonderful singers, rappers, and dancers, the group has several talented actors as well. A notable performance showcasing their unique talents is “Save Me, Save You” which blends WJSN’s space concept with sounds dripping with synth, complete with amazing choreography and highlights on several members’ voices.
Despite changes to their group’s makeup over the years, WJSN remains strong. During a worldwide pandemic in 2020, the group released NEVERLAND, with the title track “Butterfly” truly exemplifying the girl group’s growth over the years.
Overall, WJSN is the pinnacle of celestiality in the K-pop world, with beautiful sounds, strong individual talent, and grit. The group is sure to continue to shine with upcoming releases, and the Cosmic Girls fanbase, UJUNG, is sure to feel satisfied.
