Wendy: Pop Star Power

Wendy, born Shon Seung-wan in 1994, is a South Korean singer best known as a member of Red Velvet, one of K-pop's most acclaimed girl groups. Wendy made her solo debut in 2021 with her EP Like Water and later became a part of SM Entertainment's supergroup Got the Beat. While Wendy’s fame largely stems from her music career, she’s also been a notable figure on television, appearing on popular shows such as We Got Married and Saturday Night Live Korea. Beyond these ventures, she hosted the radio program Wendy's Youngstreet from 2021 to 2023 and made her theatrical debut in the musical Rebecca in 2023.

Born in Seoul, Wendy's early life was defined by her family's love for music, inspiring her to pursue a singing career from a young age. After living in both Canada and the United States during her adolescence, Wendy became fluent in multiple languages and excelled in various academic and musical activities. Her parents initially opposed her musical aspirations but eventually allowed her to audition, leading her to be cast by SM Entertainment during their global audition in Canada in 2012. Wendy trained for less than two years before debuting as part of the pre-debut group SM Rookies in 2014.

Wendy officially debuted as a member of Red Velvet in August 2014, marking the start of her journey to K-pop stardom. Throughout her career, she’s been a versatile performer, contributing to various OSTs and collaborations. In 2016, Wendy gained attention with collaborations like "Spring Love" with Eric Nam and her role as a panelist on We Got Married. Her contributions to Red Velvet’s music and her growing portfolio of solo work made her a standout in the industry, while her participation in shows like King of Mask Singer showcased her vocal prowess.

Wendy’s career took a turn in December 2019 when she suffered a severe injury during a rehearsal for a performance. After falling from a height, Wendy faced a long recovery due to multiple fractures. This forced her to take a hiatus from all activities for several months. Despite the challenges, Wendy made a full recovery and returned to the public eye in early 2021 with her highly anticipated solo debut. The EP Like Water was well-received, reaffirming her talent and resilience.

Wendy continues to diversify her career, having joined Got the Beat in 2022, and exploring new avenues like musical theater with her role in Rebecca and her newest solo release, Wish You Hell. Her dedication to music and adaptability have kept her in the spotlight, ensuring her legacy within K-pop as both a group and solo artist.
