KANGMIN’s “Free Falling”
By Hasan Beyaz
Free Falling is KANGMIN's first solo release: three tracks, all of them turned inward, all of them asking something.
The project opens with "Intro : small, fragile, and still here" an intro track that frames the whole release from a place of vulnerability. It's a disarmingly honest place to begin; an acknowledgment of smallness that doesn't collapse into self-pity, but reaches for something more stubborn. The will to keep loving yourself through self-doubt isn't a comfortable thing to put into words, let alone record. That he did says something about where he is as an artist right now.
The title track arrives next. "Free Falling" – a soaring and majestic pop number – is the centrepiece, and technically the most demanding of the three: a vocal performance built around falsetto that required serious preparation, with live performance already in mind. It's a telling detail. Even on a deeply personal project, the instinct is to think about how it will land in a room full of people.
The closing track, "in the mirror," is the most grounded. Inspired by a specific, unguarded moment – he says it came from catching his own reflection after a long day and sitting with what he saw – it doesn't reach for metaphor or distance. It captures something immediate and slightly uncomfortable, the kind of feeling most people brush past.
Across three tracks, Free Falling doesn't try to introduce a new KANGMIN so much as show what's already there, when everything else is stripped away. Read on for KANGMIN’s commentary on each track to learn about the music directly from the artist himself.
KANGMIN: The lyrics of the intro track reflect my thoughts on how there are so many people in this world, and what my existence and value mean within all of that. I also put in my will to keep loving myself and shine even through moments of self-doubt and struggle. I remember feeling a bit cringe when recording the narration, so I had to redo it several times.
KANGMIN: Recording the chorus was really tough in terms of the vocals. There are a lot of falsetto parts, so I put in a lot of work and practice on this, keeping live performances in mind.
KANGMIN: It captures the feelings of a boy facing himself in the mirror. This track was actually inspired by a moment when I happened to catch my own reflection after a long day full of schedules. The anxiousness that I saw in myself is captured in this track exactly as it was.
