This Week in K-pop Stages: SEVENTEEN, KickFlip, Dreamcatcher’s UAU and KIIRAS shine

by Anwaya Mane

This week on the K-pop stage, the platform became a true equaliser. While seasoned veterans like SEVENTEEN are celebrating their 10th debut anniversary with their album HAPPY BURSTDAY and the thunderous title track "THUNDER," new girl groups like KIIRAS, who debuted just this May 29, are stepping into the spotlight for the first time. Whether you’re an established powerhouse like SEVENTEEN or Dreamcatcher, or a fresh rookie group like KIIRAS and KickFlip, the stage is the great leveller—where everyone stands on equal footing. It’s the one place where all artists get their chance to shine, showcase their talents, and connect with fans, regardless of their background or popularity.

Stage Of The Week: SEVENTEEN - “THUNDER” (Show! MusicCore, June 5)

It’s almost hard to believe that SEVENTEEN debuted ten years ago. This exceptionally talented 13-member group embodies versatility, charisma, and stage presence as if it’s second nature to them, yet they still carry the childlike excitement of students and the enthusiasm of rookies. With the release of their fifth studio album HAPPY BURSTDAY—a special album celebrating their tenth anniversary—they deliver a vibrant burst of beats, sounds, and genres, perfectly captured in the aptly titled, thunderous music video for "THUNDER."

On June 5, SEVENTEEN took center stage on Show! Music Core airing on MBC, delivering a high-octane performance of their title track marked by skilful precision, the agility of seasoned performers, and overflowing energy and charisma.

Dressed in striking black and neon outfits, SEVENTEEN stood out against the blue-white stage backdrop, immediately launching into a high-octane, powerful choreography. These self-producing idols excel in rap, vocals, and performance, and their track "THUNDER"—written and composed by Woozi, Bumzu, and S.Coups—is an electrifying EDM dance-pop song featuring a gripping hook, mesmerising choreography, and a chant-like chorus. It’s the perfect anthem to celebrate their 10th debut anniversary: a full-throttle celebration brimming with style and energy, inviting fans and well-wishers along on this exhilarating journey. SEVENTEEN truly live up to their titles as the ‘Performance Powerhouse’ and ‘Performance Kings.’

Even a brief glimpse of their "THUNDER" performance on Show! Music Core reveals why they so rightfully deserve those accolades. Their synchronised choreography and dynamic stage presence are amplified by an undeniable charisma that radiates from every move. S.Coups' rap was amplified by Hoshi's high-energy presence, while Woozi’s vocals were beautifully complemented by Dino’s stage charisma—each member enhancing the other. Rap, vocals, and performance merged seamlessly, yet each member’s voice remained distinct, sharp, powerful, and unapologetically their own.

SEVENTEEN’s Show! Music Core performance felt less like a typical music show stage and more like a full-fledged tenth anniversary celebration for CARATs—complete with fanchants, loud cheering, clapping, and waving lightsticks. It almost felt like watching the talented group perform at their own fan meeting.

CARATs especially praised The8 and DK’s outfits, as well as Woozi’s hairstyle during the music show performance, and were thrilled that DK’s picture was chosen as the YouTube thumbnail. CARATs even joked that each member was proudly flexing their biceps and triceps on camera, making it the perfect comeback gift for their fans.

For the ending fairy, the members stood shoulder to shoulder, backs turned to the camera, as if quietly declaring, “We face the future together—today, tomorrow, and always.” It was a powerful, unspoken wish for another ten years of genre-defining music, unforgettable performances, and a legacy that continues to stand the test of time.

Honourable Mentions

Dreamcatcher’s UAU - “Sacrifice” (Show Champion)

Dreamcatcher’s first subunit, UAU, comprised of JiU, SuA, and Yoohyeon, delivered a striking performance on Show Champion with their twin tracks "Sacrifice" and "2 Months." While both stages were impressive, "Sacrifice" stood out for its captivating concept, powerful vocals, and an alluring energy that set the stage ablaze.

KickFlip - “FREEZE” (Show Champion)

Much like Dreamcatcher’s first subunit UAU, the newly debuted rookie boy group KickFlip performed two tracks—“Skip It” and “FREEZE”—on Show Champion. While both performances were strong, “FREEZE” stood out for its quintessential boy group energy, natural stage presence, and the sweet innocence that only newcomers can bring. The members infused the stage with a fresh charm that made their performance truly memorable.

KIIRAS - “KILL MA BO$$” (Music Bank)

Over the years, more idols from Southeast Asia have been making their mark in K-pop, and it’s exciting to see the industry welcome its first Malaysian idol, LingLing, who also serves as the leader of the newly debuted girl group KIIRAS. Debuting on May 29 with their groovy title track “KILL MA BO$$,” KIIRAS delivered a confident and well-prepared performance on Music Bank—a clear testament to their hard work, ambition, and the dreams they’ve now brought to life.
