Sooyoung Steps into Hollywood with John Wick spinoff 'Ballerina'

In what feels less like a celebrity crossover and more like a considered expansion of her craft, Choi Soo-young — best known as Sooyoung of Girls’ Generation — is set to make her Hollywood debut in Ballerina, the upcoming John Wick spinoff. It’s a move that aligns with her long game: one that’s quietly, steadily redefined the typical post–idol career arc.

Sooyoung joins a cast led by Ana de Armas, with Keanu Reeves allegedly reprising his role as the world-weary hitman. The film, out June 6 in North America, takes place within the stylised action-noir universe established by the John Wick series; this time, it’s fronted by a woman and driven by grief, vengeance, and choreography as combat.

Sooyoung reportedly plays Katla, a figure wrapped in intrigue. According to reports, she’s the target of the protagonist Eve’s protection assignment, an emotional pivot point in a world where alliances are rarely what they seem. It’s not a lead role, but it’s an intentional one, positioning Sooyoung as a character actor with edge and range.

For audiences who’ve tracked her evolution from K-pop idol to screen presence, this moment makes sense. While some of her peers might have chased fast fame, Sooyoung took a slower, riskier route: leaning into Korean indie dramas, ensemble casts, and genre-defying roles that earned her respect without requiring reinvention.

Her entry into Ballerina, combined with fellow Korean talent like martial arts director Jung Doo-hong also on board, reads as part of a broader reset within Western action cinema: one that increasingly leans on global expertise not just for diversity optics, but for narrative and technical elevation.

As the West continues to reevaluate its relationship with global entertainment, Sooyoung’s casting reflects a shift in how Korean talent is being integrated as contributors to story, texture, and tone.

It’s still early to say what her Hollywood chapter will look like. But if Sooyoung’s past choices are any indication, she’s here to make it count.
