SF9: Finding a Niche by Starting with Suits

It’s hard to make it in the K-pop industry, especially if an idol group doesn’t come from one of the Big 3 entertainment companies (YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and SM Entertainment). Coming from a smaller label, SF9’s success stands out. Although they’ve received comparatively poor promotion from their company, SF9 has a loyal fanbase (known as FANTASY). The group has three key strengths that have helped them succeed: talent across the board, pulling off a “suits” concept, and amazing visuals.
Shortened from Sensational Feeling 9, SF9 debuted as FNC Entertainment’s first dance boy group. They debuted on October 5, 2016, with nine members: Youngbin, Inseong, Jaeyoon, Dawon, Zuho, Yoo Taeyang, Hwiyoung, Chani, and Rowoon. Rowoon left the group on September 18, 2023, to focus on his acting career.

Although the group has struggled to gain momentum, SF9 is incredibly talented. Besides having five great vocalists and four amazing rappers, every member has dance skills and good visuals, and all of them have acted as well. It’s rare to find a group with so much talent in every member.
SF9 gained more attention after Chani starred in Sky Castle and Rowoon was in MBC’s Extraordinary You. During this surge in popularity, SF9 released their "Good Guy” MV, which was the group’s peak, with over 45 million views on YouTube. The MV showcases a “suits concept” with the members in suits presenting a classic masculine charm. The concept was more sophisticated and mature than their previous music, but it was a hit.
SF9’s success with the “suits concept,” is largely due to their great visuals. Known for their height, the group has earned nicknames like 'Giant-nine.’ Their stature enhances their stage presence, allowing them to pull off the suit concept in “Good Guy.” Their visuals aren’t just good looks-wise, but also design-wise. The choreography and cinematography in the "Now or Never" MV show off the group’s dance skills and beautiful set design.
Since their debut, SF9 has evolved from youthful and passionate beginnings to darker, sexier themes. Along the way, they’ve been influenced by touches of Latin, retro 50s, and Western sounds. Although the group does seem to blend in with the plethora of boy groups out there, SF9 is sure to stand out more as they push their limits and find their niche.
