JYJ: K-pop for a Better World

It’s not uncommon for groups and idols to spend time and attention on their global audience; despite coming from Korea, K-pop is a decidedly international phenomenon. However, one group has shown time and time again that there’s a lot more you can do to be a global citizen than simply releasing content in other languages. JYJ have gone above and beyond by being ambassadors for global causes, paying attention to the needs of international audiences, and blazing the trail for K-pop performances in new parts of the world.

The boy band debuted in 2010 under C-JeS Entertainment. All three members were originally part of the group TVXQ, but they left in 2009 after legal disputes with SM Entertainment. From the very beginning, they were an international-focused group, with their first album topping charts in Japan. The group was primarily active from 2010 to 2015, although it was announced last year that all three members had left C-JeS, which has left many fans speculating about a comeback on their own terms.
Although most, if not all, groups are ambassadors of social causes, JYJ ambassadorships have primarily been for international causes. They performed in 2011 for the Asia Dream Cup, a soccer tournament whose proceeds help develop sports programs across Asia. They have also served as ambassadors for programs seeking to improve agriculture in developing nations, global nuclear security summits, and water security programs. Additionally, JYJ has donated to support victims of natural disasters around the world such as floods and eathquakes.

On top of financial support and lending their talent to these causes, JYJ have also taken the initiative to support their international fans themselves. For example, after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake rocked much of Japan, JYJ adjusted their schedules and tour dates to perform special charity concerts in Tokyo and Ibaraki. The group received praise for these performances.

The group has also traveled to many parts of the world, making them one of the most accessible groups to international audiences. In addition to Korea and Japan, JYJ has performed in Thailand, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Spain, Germany, Canada, the United States and many more. They were the first K-pop group to perform in Chile and Peru, which shows the extra attention the group pays to their global fans.
Another fun tidbit is that the group also pioneered collaborations with international artists. Although it’s common now for idols to work with Western musicians, that was not the case in 2010 when JYJ worked with Kanye West and Malik Yusef.
Like mentioned before, the group has recently left their management company, which leaves the door wide open to new possibilities. Whatever JYJ decides to do moving forward, as a group or as individuals, you can be sure they’ll be sure to act in ways that benefit fans and friends around the world.
