Heize: A Name to Know

Heize, born Jang Da-hye, has carved a unique niche in the K-pop industry as a talented rapper, singer-songwriter, and producer. Her stage name, inspired by American rapper Angel Haze, came to her naturally, leading to the distinct spelling "Heize." She made her debut in 2014 with the EP Heize and quickly gained widespread recognition after her appearance on the second season of the reality show Unpretty Rapstar. This appearance defined much of her trajectory in her early career, where, despite being eliminated in the semi-finals, she captured significant attention of the masses.

Her breakout single "Star" soared to the top of the music charts, solidifying her status as a rising, well, star. Her 2016 EP And July featured hit singles like "And July'' and "Shut Up & Groove," which performed well on both Korean and international charts. Later that year, her digital single "Star" achieved an ‘All-Kill’ by reaching number one on all Korean music real-time charts. Subsequent EPs, including /// (You, Clouds, Rain) and Wind, continued to top the charts, establishing Heize as a powerful force in the industry.

In 2019, Heize released her first full-length studio album She's Fine, which received critical acclaim and was ranked number 11 on Billboard's "25 Best K-pop Albums of 2019." The album showcased her unique blend of R&B, soul, and hip-hop, earning praise for its "satin-soft sensitivity." The single "We Don't Talk Together," featuring Giriboy and produced by BTS's Suga, further demonstrated her versatility and collaborative prowess.

Heize's influence extends beyond her own fandom. She has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Dean, Loco, and Suran, and according to IMDB, her music has been featured in popular Korean dramas and international television shows like Grey's Anatomy and Empire. She has garnered several awards, including the 2017 Korean Music Award for Best Female R&B/Soul Artist and the 2017 Melon Music Award for Best OST for "Round and Round" from the Goblin soundtrack. Her global recognition was further cemented with a BET Award nomination for Best International Act in 2018.

In recent years, Heize has continued to evolve as an artist. After signing with P Nation in 2020, she released her seventh EP Happen in 2021 and her second studio album Undo in 2022. She also ventured into radio, joining the show Volume Up in August 2022. Heize's journey from reality show contestant to celebrated solo artist highlights her unique blend of musical talent, emotional depth, and ability to connect with audiences both in South Korea and internationally.
