Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “Reminiscence” by Rolling Quartz

Some songs just nail an effective intro. This song begins with six solid seconds of interestingly mixed drum kit. The kick drum and hi hat are super dry, but the snare is reverbed to such a degree that it borders on epic, anthemic distortion. The drums are mid tempo, but the way they’re mixed promise something huge.

But the song immediately switches vibes. That drum kit disappears, and a slow, singer-songwriter track ensues. Long pedal tones in the bass lay a foundation for the plucked electric guitar to build off of as the vocal melody wraps listeners up in the first verse. It makes the listener ask: when are those drums going to come back in? The foreshadowing is a really effective way to build anticipation.

When the song drops and they finally come rolling back in, it’s really, really cool. We’re particular fans of the guitar solo in this song. It’s way bluesier than it has any right to be, and it adds unique flair.
