Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “Last” by Dvwn
By Dvwn

Pronounced “Dawn,” this Korean singer/songwriter has crafted a neo-soul gem that would make John Mayer jealous. Complete with some subtle organ, chromatic changes, walking bass, and excellent guitar work, this 6/8 time ballad feels retro without sacrificing modern production techniques.

Dvwn’s vocals deserve an entire paragraph. After all, they’re what sets this track apart from other worthy entries in the neo-soul genre. Far from conventional, they feel way more pop than soul. His vocal runs are tight and calculated, and he slips effortlessly in between his falsetto and his chest voice like a true master of his craft. Despite the flawless execution, he maintains a biting, brassy edge to his voice that feels too edgy to be a true pop vocal. In short, Dvwn draws from a host of vocal traditions and blends them into something utterly captivating.
We can’t recommend this song enough. It’s too good.
