Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “I Want to Be Closer to You” by SOLE
By SOLE

The best thing about Korean Indie music is how it borrows textures from other textures and repurposes them in ways you don’t see coming. “I Want to Be Closer to You” rips all of the cheesy/corny textures from smooth 90s American adult contemporary and makes them stylish, earnest, modern, and cool. The synthy e-piano, the saxophone, the slappy snare drums – they’re all present, but repackaged in a way that’s fresh and exciting.

Sole is an adept vocalist, belting and riffing like the best of them. “I Want to Be Closer to You” dropped in 2023 and is just a taste of the great music present on her EP, A Love Supreme. It’s a cover album, but she makes each track her own and brings them into the 2020s. It’s a must-listen.
