Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “Devils in the city (feat. Dok2)” by SURAN

This song was released in 2022, but is such a sleeper hit. SURAN’s soulful voice stands apart from typical K-pop vocal stylings. Paired with strong English lyrical delivery, she feels like she’d be at home in America, selling out venues and making concertgoers swoon. This mellow, melodic pop song has neon synths and crispy, crunchy percussion over a strong, subby beat.
Dok2’s verse is tasteful and swaggy, and doesn’t overstay its welcome. It’s a nice feature that keeps listeners engaged before hitting them with SURAN’s gloriously soulful and airy vocals once again.
The song isn’t afraid of space, either. There are moments where the drums drop out almost entirely, allowing the song’s signature synths to really shine. They’re forceful but breezy – feeling like a strong gust of pop wind.
While some might be turned off by the idea of devils roaming around in their city, SURAN makes this song sound so good that it might as well be heaven.
