Chungha: A Multitool of Musical Prowess

From her days as a member of I.O.I to her solo career, Chungha has always stood out confidently thanks primarily to her amazing dance abilities, though she also has a beautiful repertoire of music and skills as a host and MC.

Chungha was born in Seoul but lived in Dallas, Texas for eight years before moving back to South Korea. Because of her stint in the US, she speaks English as well as Korean, giving her a slight edge over other K-pop stars her age. Chungha graduated from Sejong University with a degree in dance. She auditioned for several entertainment labels before joining MNH Entertainment in 2016.

In 2015, Mnet announced their survival show Produce 101, which brought 101 trainees from different entertainment companies to create a girl group. Representing MNH Entertainment, Chungha finished 4th on Produce 101 and became part of the girl group I.O.I. Sadly, the eleven-member group didn’t last long and disbanded in 2017.

Shortly thereafter, Chungha made her debut as a solo artist with her pre-debut single “Week,” followed by her debut EP, Hands on Me. Chungha’s second EP Offset proved to be one of the reasons she became popular. The title track “Roller Coaster” is full of alt-R&B and groovy strings while reflecting on the ups and downs of a relationship. The MV is very 90s with neon colors and rollercoaster videos.

The MV for “Snapping” is proof that if Chungha focused more on her intricate dance routines, she’d become even more popular. With its dynamic choreography and eye-catching cinematography, “Snapping” is like a magic spell, complete with amazing outfits.

Chungha has also worked as a host and as an MC. So basically, she’s a multitool of musical prowess and deserves more recognition in the K-pop world. Chungha is still actively making music and shaping the musical landscape.
