BIBI: From Bedroom to Stardom

Kim Hyung-seo, known professionally as BIBI, has carved a distinctive niche in the South Korean music and entertainment industry through her multifaceted career. Rising to prominence as a runner-up on the reality show The Fan in 2018, she quickly attracted attention with her unique blend of musical styles, including R&B, soul, hip-hop, and ballads. Her lyrics, deeply personal and reflective of her own experiences, have resonated with many.

BIBI's early life in Ulsan and Changwon was marked by a sense of isolation, which she channeled into writing lyrics from a young age (fun fact: her younger sister, Kim Na-kyoung, also joined the music world later in life with the girl group TripleS). Discovered by Yoon Mi-rae on SoundCloud, BIBI's career took off when she joined Feel Ghood Music in 2017. Her official debut came in 2019 with the single "Binu," followed by her second EP Life is a Bi... in 2021. Her collaboration with 88rising on the single "The Weekend" marked a significant milestone, as it peaked at #29 on the Mediabase Top 40 chart, making her the first Korean female soloist to achieve this. In 2022, she solidified her place in the music scene with her first studio album, Lowlife Princess: Noir, showcasing her eclectic and heartfelt approach to music.
In addition to her musical endeavors, BIBI has made a name for herself in acting. Her roles in the film Hopeless and the television series The Worst of Evil in 2023 earned her critical acclaim and a Best New Actress award at the Baeksang Arts Awards in 2024. Her artistry extends to her stage name and appearance, with the two red dots under her eyes serving as a tribute to her grandfather and a reminder to stay grounded while performing.

BIBI's journey has been one of perseverance and innovation. From recording music in her small room to performing on international stages, she has maintained a unique voice in both the underground and pop scenes. Her performance at the 88rising’s Head In The Clouds music festival, where she made headlines for her bold on-stage antics, exemplifies her fearless approach to her art. Despite initial hesitations, BIBI has embraced her role as a performer, gaining confidence and recognition for her talents.

Looking ahead, BIBI has ambitious plans to continue expanding her artistic repertoire, including acting, writing a webtoon, and continuing to make music. Her path is driven by a desire to entertain and bring happiness to others, a purpose she discovered early in life. As she continues to break boundaries and challenge norms, BIBI aims to inspire other solo Korean underground artists to follow in her footsteps, balancing the best of both the mainstream and underground music worlds. Her journey is a testament to her resilience, creativity, and unwavering commitment to her craft.
