Baekhyun: “Genius Idol”

Byun Baek-hyun, better known as Baekhyun, is a prominent South Korean singer, songwriter, and actor, who first gained global recognition as a member of the boy band EXO and its subunits EXO-K and EXO-CBX. Since his debut in 2012, Baekhyun has been celebrated for his vocal prowess, earning titles like “Genius Idol.” He is also a key figure in the K-pop supergroup SuperM.

Baekhyun's early life in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, laid the foundation for his future in music. He began his training at age 11, influenced by Rain, a famous South Korean singer. Before joining SM Entertainment in 2011, Baekhyun was active in his high school's band and trained in Hapkido, achieving a dan 3 black belt. His time at SM prepared him to become EXO’s ninth member in 2012, and the group rapidly became one of K-pop’s most successful acts, known for their polished performances and wide-ranging musical styles. Baekhyun’s talent shone through as he also hosted music shows, performed in musicals, and contributed to EXO’s web-drama soundtrack.

Baekhyun's solo career, which began in 2019, has been marked by commercial success, including multiple million-selling albums, most notably City Lights, Delight, and Bambi. His career also includes collaborations, theater roles, and brand endorsements, solidifying his influence across various entertainment sectors.

Baekhyun's solo journey began with his EP City Lights, which became the best-selling album by a solo artist in South Korea in the 2010s, establishing him as a dominant figure outside of EXO. His 2020 EP Delight further cemented his status by becoming the first solo album to sell over 1 million copies in 19 years. This success was followed by the release of Bambi in 2021, right before Baekhyun enlisted for his mandatory military service. Notably, Baekhyun was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, leading to his service as a public worker rather than an active-duty soldier. He was discharged in 2023 and quickly returned to music, much to the delight of his fans.

During his enlistment, Baekhyun founded INB100, his own label, marking a significant shift in his career. This decision was influenced by a brief contract dispute with SM Entertainment in mid-2023. Although the disagreement was resolved, Baekhyun, along with fellow EXO members Chen and Xiumin, has now begun working under INB100 while continuing EXO activities under SM Entertainment. His return to solo activities was marked by the announcement of a concert tour, Lonsdaleite, slated to begin in 2024, alongside a comeback in September 2024.

Beyond music, Baekhyun’s distinctive tenor voice and commanding stage presence have led to several high-profile collaborations and endorsements. He has worked with brands like Montblanc, Burberry, and Privé by BBH, his own unisex streetwear line. His role as co-creative director of the latter reflects his passion for fashion, a facet of his career that has further broadened his global appeal.
