Baby DONT Cry

Are Learning to Find Strength in Softer Sounds

By Hasan Beyaz

Last summer, Baby DONT Cry arrived in K-pop with a clear sense of attitude. The four-member group – Yihyun, Kumi, Mia and Beni – debuted in June 2025 as the first girl group from P NATION, the agency founded by PSY. They introduced themselves with "F Girl", a debut single built around self-confidence and an unapologetic refusal to be defined by other people's expectations. Their musical identity was labelled "Baby Rock" – pairing youthful energy with a more assertive approach to pop.

Their subsequent releases, including "I DONT CARE" and their first EP AFTER CRY, began to demonstrate a broader emotional and musical range. The latter, released in March 2026, brought together different moods and sounds, allowing the members to move beyond the straightforward confidence of their debut. For a group still in the early stages of its career, that willingness to explore different forms of expression is an important part of establishing what Baby DONT Cry can become.

Their new single, "Replay", takes that exploration into R&B. Rather than relying on the louder energy that has characterised much of their earlier work, the track places greater emphasis on delicate vocals and a more restrained delivery. It asks something different of the four members, particularly as singers: knowing when to pull back, how to express the feeling of a song through a softer tone, and how each member's distinct vocal character can complement the others to create a more cohesive group sound.

To mark their new single, KPOPWORLD caught up with Baby DONT Cry about their evolving vocal abilities, the emotional detail behind their latest release, and the musical directions they hope to explore next.
Your new single explores a more mature R&B sound. What did you want to explore with your voices on this track that you had not explored in previous releases?

Yihyun We wanted to show a more mature and calmer tone. I personally spent a lot of time practicing how to sing with less power in my voice.

Kumi I tried to sing in a softer and more delicate way than usual. I really liked being able to show a new side of my voice!

Mia I challenged myself to sing in a calmer and softer tone than before. I thought a lot about how to express the emotions through my voice, and I also worked on details like vibrato and smaller vocal expressions.

Beni I wanted to put my natural voice into this song. While practicing, I realized that my voice actually sounded more charming when I wasn’t trying to change it too much and just sang naturally.

As you explore a more mature R&B sound, what have you discovered about your strengths as vocalists that you would like to explore further in future releases?

Yihyun I used a lot more falsetto in this song, and it made me want to keep developing that side of my voice.

Kumi I think expressing emotions with a softer voice is a new strength I discovered in myself. I’d like to keep showing different sides of my voice and different moods!

Mia While recording this song, I realized that R&B suits each of our vocal tones better than I expected. Even in a calmer song, you can still hear each member’s own color clearly, so I’d like to bring out those strengths even more in the future.

Beni I think I learned how to express emotions in a more delicate way without putting too much power into my voice. This song helped me discover a wider range of emotional expression. Going forward, I’d like us to bring out each member’s vocal tone more clearly while also improving how our four voices blend together.

Did you approach the song's emotional story differently from your previous releases? If so, what changed in the way you interpreted it?

Yihyun In our previous songs, we showed our confident energy in a more direct way, but this time, I tried to express the emotions more delicately. I thought a lot about how I could make the lyrics feel more real when I sang them.

Kumi This time, instead of focusing on a bright and confident feeling, I tried to express the feeling of not being able to forget someone in a more delicate way. I think I spent more time thinking deeply about the lyrics while singing.

Mia I think it was a little different. Before, we expressed our emotions in a more honest and direct way, but this time, I wanted to leave a little more emotion lingering after each line. So rather than putting too much emotion into the song, I tried to express it more naturally.

Beni I tried to express the emotions in a more delicate and deeper way than in our previous songs. Instead of focusing on strong energy, I paid more attention to my breathing and vocal tone so that the feelings in the lyrics could come through naturally.

Baby DONT Cry have built a reputation around bold, confident energy. Did recording a more emotionally restrained song challenge you in any way?

Yihyun “Replay” definitely feels more mature than our previous songs, which were more direct and confident, so expressing the emotions was a little difficult at first. Instead of only focusing on the notes and pronunciation, I spent a lot more time thinking about what I should be feeling while singing each lyric.

Kumi It felt a little unfamiliar at first, but it was also fun because I got to express emotions that were different from what I usually show. I think it gave me a chance to show a new side of myself!

Mia Using a pretty falsetto and adding vibrato was difficult for me. Those details were important for bringing out the mood of the song, so I practiced them a lot. I think they helped make the song sound more polished, and I also feel like I improved a lot through the process.

Beni At first, it was a little difficult to express the mood of the song without making the emotions too strong. But as I practiced and focused more on my own voice, I learned a new way of expressing myself and discovered another side of our group.

R&B often relies on subtle vocal details rather than sheer power. Which part of the recording process required the most attention from you?

Yihyun I usually sing with a little more power, so I worked hard to make sure my voice didn’t stand out too much when it blended with the other members’ voices.

Kumi I focused on keeping my voice soft instead of singing too strongly. I wanted even the smaller emotions in the song to come through clearly.

Mia Emotion was important, but I also paid a lot of attention to my breathing and the dynamics of my voice. Even with the same lyrics, the feeling can change a lot depending on how you sing them, so I practiced even the smallest details carefully.

Beni I focused a lot on the mood of each note and the rhythm. The same lyric can feel completely different depending on how you sing it, so I spent a lot of time finding a vocal tone that fit the mood of the song.

The track has a more understated sound than some of your previous releases. How would you translate that change in energy into your stage presence?

Yihyun We didn’t want to lose the honest energy that Baby DONT Cry has, but we also worked hard to show more delicate and detailed emotions this time.

Kumi This time, I want to express the emotions more through my facial expressions and eyes rather than through big movements. I also want to show a more mature side of myself on stage!

Mia Instead of showing strong energy, I want to create the mood through my expressions and the way I look at the camera. My goal is to look more relaxed and show a more mature side of myself on stage.

Beni I want to look more relaxed on stage. I want the vocals and performance to come together naturally so that the audience can feel the emotions in the song with us.

As a group, do you find it easier to express vulnerable emotions through music than you would in everyday life?

Yihyun I think feelings that are hard to express with words become much easier to show once there’s a melody and a beat. I think that’s one of the best things about music.

Kumi I think it’s easier to express feelings through singing that might be difficult to say honestly in everyday life. That’s one of the reasons music feels so special to me.

Mia I think so. Sometimes it’s difficult for me to explain my feelings in words, but through music, I can connect the lyrics to my own experiences and express those emotions more naturally.

Beni I think music lets us naturally express feelings that can be difficult to put into words. I’m really happy that we can show a more honest side of ourselves through this song, and I’d like to keep expressing these kinds of emotions in our own way.

Looking back at your releases so far, what do you think has changed the most about Baby DONT Cry's musical identity?

Yihyun Starting with [AFTER CRY], I think we began showing not only our confident side, but also our emotions in a more honest way. Through that, I feel like Baby DONT Cry’s honest and confident identity has become even clearer.

Kumi I think we’ve become able to express a wider range of emotions and moods than before. I want us to keep trying new genres and continue building our own color!

Mia At first, we focused mostly on showing our bright and confident energy. Now, I think we’re able to show many different emotions and moods within that. The range of music we can express has slowly become wider, and I think that’s the biggest change.

Beni I think the biggest change is that the way we express emotions and the range of music we can handle have both grown. At first, we focused on showing our bright and confident energy, but now we can also express calmer and more delicate emotions in our own way.

Is there a side of yourselves that you feel fans have not yet had the opportunity to discover through your music?

Yihyun I don’t think we’ve had many chances to show our more mature and honest side yet, so I think we’ll be able to show a lot more of that through this song!

Kumi I think there’s a big difference between my quiet and cute side off stage and my cooler side on stage. I’d like to show more of that contrast in the future!

Mia I think there are still so many sides of us that we haven’t shown yet! I want to show more natural sides of ourselves, cooler sides, and many more charms that our fans haven’t seen yet.

Beni I don’t think we’ve fully shown our deeper emotions or our vocal charms yet. I’d like us to try more different genres and show new sides of ourselves through music that brings out each member’s individuality.

As you continue to explore different sounds and emotions, what is one musical direction you would like Baby DONT Cry to try next?

Yihyun I want to keep the confident and honest energy that we’ve shown so far, but I’d also like us to try many different genres instead of staying within just one style.

Kumi I think there are still so many sides of myself that I haven’t shown yet! I want to try different concepts in the future and show Cherries new sides of me that they haven’t seen before.

Mia There are so many genres I want to try. Personally, I’d like to try something with a cooler mood, and I’d also like to do a song that shows our vocals even more. No matter what genre we try in the future, I want us to keep showing Baby DONT Cry’s own color.

Beni I’d like us to try sounds that are a little more free and experimental. I don’t want us to be limited by one image, and I hope we can keep expressing different emotions and moods while creating a new musical color that feels like Baby DONT Cry.
