AB6IX: Genre Blenders

K-pop is saturated with popular R&B and EDM sounds. Boy group AB6IX (pronounced “A-B-Six”), on the other hand, is a group that embraces a range of genres in their music. They pull this off as they blend genres within their albums, write deep lyrics, and are heavily involved in their music’s production.

AB6IX debuted on May 22, 2019, under the label Brand New Music. Before their debut, the group’s five members—Youngmin, Donghyun, Woojin, Woong, and Daehwi—were contestants in the second season of Produce 101. Donghyun and Youngmin were also part of the duo MXM for a while. These projects created a fanbase and exposure for the future group.

AB6IX, short for “absolute six,” embraced a wide range of music styles as they blended different genres in their albums. Their album 6ixense presents a sweet mixture of gentle pop, hip-hop, and late-night EDM. Listening to tracks like “Blind for Love,” you can really hear a sleek house-inspired kind of sound.

The group also amazing depth in their lyrics. Take a Chance features songs with darker themes, like “Weightless,” which explores the feeling of being scattered over time.

AB6IX is actively involved in their music production. Lee Dae-hwi has written a ton of the songs and composed as well. That way, they’re better able to infuse personality and emotions into their music.

As AB6IX continues to blend genres and create emotional music, my hope is that they’ll increase in popularity as well. They’re not the biggest group out there, but they’re a talented group of boys. Despite former leader Youngmin’s departure from the group in 2020, I’m certain they’ll go places.
