100%: A Legacy of Emotional Depth

Nowadays, K-pop is so focused on catchy hooks and visually appealing choreography that have the potential to go viral on TikTok. Back in the day—2012, that is—K-pop wasn’t so focused on these things but more about creating emotional performances with good vocals.100% was one of the most impressive groups that originated during this time in K-pop history. They truly resonated with fans looking for more than just entertainment—they sought to build connection. 100% had a way of communicating raw emotion while continuously evolving through hardship. This left a great legacy, despite the group’s disbandment.

100% debuted on September 18, 2012, under TOP Media—the same label that managed Teen Top. The boy group was first made up of seven people: Minwoo, Rockhyun, Jonghwan, Chanyong, Changbum, Hyukjin, and Sanghoon. Before 100%’s debut, Rockhyun was already part of a duo called Jumper and Minwoo was in several K-dramas.

From the beginning of their music career, 100% stood out because of their strong vocal talent. Their debut track “Bad Boy,” became a hallmark of their music. The song features sensitive, emotive vocals about a man breaking up with his girlfriend.

100% transformed with the change of the music scene, attempting to stay relevant while staying true to their values. Their 2019 album RE:tro was a mix of retro sounds and modern pop. 100% wasn’t afraid to take risks and grow as a group, and it shows. The album’s title track, “Still Loving You,” proved to be one of their most popular songs. The MV is beautiful and perfectly matches the nostalgic feeling of the song, complete with old box TVs and bright colors.

Sanghoon went on hiatus beginning in 2014 and Changbum left the group in 2016. Sadly, Minwoo passed away in 2018 due to cardiac arrest. The unexpected passing of the group’s leader was a tragedy. The group was a significant blow to them but they chose to continue to make music, staying true to what they thought Minwoo would want. 100% was more than just a group—they were a family.

100% excelled in vocal performance and growth while working through hardship. Eventually, the group officially disbanded on October 9, 2021, after the remaining members’ contracts expired. Although officially disbanded, they remain in the hearts of K-pop fans everywhere, leaving behind a legacy of emotional depth and sincerity.
