Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “Pizza” by Oohyo

Is there anything more romantic than hearing that “pizza sucks without you”? That the lack of your presence makes one of the best and most universally beloved foods into a bland and disappointing experience? There probably is, but that sentiment, voiced by Oohyo on her track “Pizza,” is one of the most real depictions of post-breakup missing someone we’ve ever heard. The feelings of wanting someone back are so intense, it makes everything else unenjoyable. The rest of the song describes how boring the days are and how obsessed the speaker is with the person who has left. (Surely anyone who has been the dump-ee of a breakup knows this feeling all too well.)

Musically, the song is standard Oohyo faire - glistening synths, groovy beats, sparkling piano, and effortless harmonies throughout. The song starts quiet but builds in the background without drawing attention before the first chorus bursts into this massive sound. It’s a lot of fun, and the second verse pulls in a clavinet sound to really remind the listener how funky they’re feeling and to forget all the pain and sadness in the lyrics. The song is rewarding to listen to, no matter if you care more about lyrics or sounds, and anyone curious about Oohyo can absolutely count on this as a great starting point.
